As the clock ticks down on the start of the 2024 NFL campaign, sportsbooks have released odds for which team will score the most points during the regular season. The Super Bowl favorites, the San Francisco 49ers and Kansas City Chiefs, are both in the top three for odds, while a host of other teams are right behind and vying for position.

The Niners improved on a sixth-place finish in 2022 and scored the second–most points per game last year. They could take a step back if Brandon Aiyuk’s trade demand results in him skipping town, but Kyle Shanahan’s system combined with the sheer level of talent all over the roster gives them one of the highest floors in the league. Brock Purdy is also still just 24 years old and should improve after a near-MVP season.
Offensive coordinator Ben Johnson has had the Lions functioning like a well-oiled machine for a few years. Jared Goff is coming off the best year of his career, while David Montgomery and Jahmyr Gibbs blended together seamlessly in the backfield. The receiving options of Amon-Ra St. Brown and Sam LaPorta are elite, and the offensive line is arguably the best in football.
The Chiefs were a middle-of-the-road offensive team last year but should be much better this time around. Travis Kelce is 34 and isn’t as dominant as he once was, but the additions of speedsters Marquise “Hollywood” Brown and rookie Xavier Worthy should reopen the downfield passing attack Mahomes made a name off of early in his career. Mahomes himself is also the best player, at this stage of his career, the league has seen and will have the offense humming.
Philly had a number of problems, Jalen Hurts didn’t play anywhere near his best, and the team lost six of its last seven games—and they still finished seventh in points per game. An offseason of rest and recovery will do the team well as Kellen Moore prepares to lead his team into the new season as the new offensive coordinator. The addition of running back Saquon Barkley will give them more balance on the ground, even following the retirement of Jason Kelce.
Dallas led the league in scoring in 2023, though that could not have been achieved without the excellence of the defense. Dak Prescott has arguably the worst supporting cast of his career, and both he and CeeDee Lamb will need to carry the offense more times than not. We don’t see them finding much success on the ground and can envision a world in which Dak posts gaudy box scores, which could result in them scoring more points.
C.J. Stroud snuck into the MVP conversation as a rookie and has lofty expectations heading into year two. He’ll be aided by the return of the injured Tank Dell, along with the offseason additions of Stefon Diggs (who has a point to prove following the end of his tenure in Buffalo) and Joe Mixon, who was eighth in rushing yards last season. They only have a chance if Stroud builds on an impressive year, but all signs point to him doing just that.
Count the Rams out at your own expense. They ranked ninth in PPG last year, have a Triple Crown winner in Cooper Kupp, an elite young wideout in Puka Nacua, and drafted national champion and running back Blake Corum to boost their run game. Matthew Stafford also threw for 296 yards per game and 17 touchdowns over the final seven weeks of the season, including a one-point playoff loss to the Lions.
We trust C.J. Stroud. The second-overall pick of a year ago threw for 4,108 yards, 23 touchdowns, and only five interceptions in only 15 games despite losing his top wideout halfway through the year and having a poor run game. Houston’s defense also improved over the offseason and he should make sure he spends more time with the ball in his hands, which sets this team up to be a real threat to lead the league in scoring.
