Quarterback Tua Tagovailoa is 4-0 with the Miami Dolphins and the team is thriving with the talented rookie under center, now just a game out of first place in the AFC East, they are looking to collect more wins so they can at least score of Wild Card spot in the upcoming playoffs.
Last week, the Denver Broncos lost to the Las Vegas Raiders by the lopsided score of 12-37 and quarterback Drew Lock seems to have gone from good to not so good in a short amount of time, his completion percentage continuing to dip below 50 and his 4 interceptions last week not a good sign.
These two AFC franchises have played each other 19 times (including 1 postseason game), with the Denver Broncos winning 6 games and the Miami Dolphins winning 12 games, plus they have tied once.
The kid is good, rookie quarterback Tua Tagovailoa, that is, the 22-year old rookie sensation who is already 4-0 as the Dolphins starter and has this talented young team looking like winners and actually capable of seeing the postseason.
Some experts claimed Tua would have been the first overall pick had his injuries not caused him to miss so much playing time in his final year at Alabama, and now watching him run and pass like a veteran after just four starts is proof that he has all it takes to thrive at this level.
This season in four games, Tagovailoa is 49-of-77 for 519 total yards and 5 touchdowns with 0 interceptions, plus he has run the ball 15 times for another 34 yards, a young player with speed and a laser for an arm who seems ready to keep progressing to the next level.
Broncos QB Drew Lock is only in his second NFL season, so it is understandable that he will take some more time to adjust to the professional level of football, but his numbers seem to be going the wrong way lately.
For instance, his completion percentage has dropped from 63.41 in Week 8 to 48.94 in Week 10, meaning less than half of his passes are being caught and that is a problem for a team whose passing attacked is currently ranked 23rd.
Another tough start on Lock’s line is the fact that he has more interceptions (10) than passing touchdowns (7) on the year, and though he has also carried the ball into the end zone twice this season, those numbers have to start going in the other direction for the Broncos to win.
As good as Tua is at QB, the Dolphins also need a run game to balance their offense out, and that is the job of running back Matt Breida, who is in his fourth NFL season and first with Miami, his other pro years spend in San Francisco with the 49ers.
Breida is a hard runner who is tough to tackle at 5’ 10” and 190 pounds, and he averages almost 5 yards per carry (4.9) and can also catch the ball, though he has yet to find the endzone this season.
His numbers are low – 37 carries for 128 yards in the seven games he’s played in – and he will have to step up and become a bigger factor out of the backfield to help take the opposition’s attention off Tua’s passing offense.
The Broncos are running back Melvin Gordon’s third NFL team, and in the 8 games he’s played in this season he has become a critical part of Denver’s rushing attack.
So far this year he has carried the ball 107 times for 439 yards and 4 touchdowns with 20 receptions for 87 yards and another touchdown through the air.
Gordon’s best game in 2020 was in Week 4 against the Jets when he carried the ball 23 times for 107 yards and 2 touchdowns, and if he is able to get production like that against the Dolphins it would go a long way towards helping his Broncos win in Week 11.
