Even though at this point the Los Angeles Chargers have been eliminated from playoff contention and their HC Anthony Lynn will most likely be gone at the end of the year, it would be a nice confidence builder for LA’s young rookie QB Justin Herbert if they can sneak a win against these Las Vegas Raiders in Week 15.
The Las Vegas Raiders got on a bit of a roll on both sides of the ball there, but in Week 14 they ended up getting beat by the defensive-heavy Indy Colts, final score 44-27, and now they are in a must-win situation against these Chargers, a game that could come down to QB Derek Carr connecting well with TE Darren Waller.
These two AFC West franchises have played each other 122 prior times (including 1 postseason game), with the Las Vegas Raiders winning 66 of those games and the Los Angeles Chargers winning 54 of the games, plus there have been 2 ties.

The answer under center in LA is supposed to be rookie Justin Herbert, the former Oregon star who was a first-round pick in the last draft (6th overall), a playmaker with a big arm who is being counted on to fit in sooner rather than later for the Chargers.
So far, despite his 3-9 record as the starter, Herbert has posted respectable rookie numbers, completing 331-of-499 for 3,467 yards and 25 touchdowns with 10 interceptions while also carrying the ball 41 times for 185 yards and 3 more touchdowns.
At some point, Herbert’s production will translate into victories, but for now, the Chargers are too far behind and too banged up to be a factor, with about thirteen players listed as questionable for this Week 15 matchup with the Raiders.
Derek Carr is having yet another fine season as the Raiders starting QB, posting numbers that are far better than the team’s 7-6 record might indicate, still good enough to keep them in the run for the playoffs if they can win a few more games during the rest of the season.
Carr is accurate, completing over 68 percent of his passes, and he has three receivers that are handy targets, rookie Henry Ruggs III, Nelson Agholar and a slot receiver named Hunter Renfrow who is so consistent with converting third downs that the team has officially named that situation Third-and-Renfrow.
Carr has 24 touchdown passes this season – three more than last year altogether – and he has 7 interceptions so far – he averages about 10 a season – so now it’s just a matter of getting him to convert those effective numbers into team wins.
In his eighth NFL season, WR Keenan Allen has been capable of putting up huge numbers for his Chargers, and it looks like he is on the way to doing the same in 2020 without the comfort of former QB Philip Rivers throwing to him.
Now it’s rookie QB Justin Herbert, but that doesn’t seem to matter to Allen, who is right on schedule with his production, so far with 99 catches for 975 yards and 8 touchdowns on the season.
Allen is at the beginning of a four-year, $80.1 million contract extension that he signed in September, so expect he and Herbert to begin finding a way to become one of the better QB / WR duos in the league.
Sure, Raiders QB Carr has three incredible receivers to target (see above), but one of his favorite weapons on the Las Vegas roster is Darren Waller, his 6’6” 255-pound tight end who has soft hands but who is almost impossible to tackle.
Tights ends who can catch and run afterward with the ball are valuable as ever in the league, and Waller is slowly becoming one of those stars at his position who can be both a reliable pass catcher while being an effective blocker.
On the season, Waller has caught 84 passes off 117 targets for 817 yards and 7 touchdowns, while also helping create holes with his blocking for Raiders running backs Josh Jacobs and Devontae Booker, proving to be a tight end who should be a key part to this Raiders offense moving forward.
