Jets vs. Patriots Picks, Predictions and Odds: Will the Pats Continue to Impress as Underdogs?

  • The teams split their 2023 series 1-1

  • Neither starting quarterback has thrown an interception

  • The Patriots are 2-0 against the spread, both times covering as an underdog

The New York Jets will host the New England Patriots in the second straight AFC East showdown on Thursday Night Football.

Aaron Rodgers infamously tore his Achilles in primetime last year. He’s coming off of a solid game against the Titans during which he had 176 yards, two touchdowns, and no interceptions, and he can help his team move up in the division with a win.

Here, we will break down the betting odds and share our favorite Jets vs. Patriots betting picks for Thursday Night Football.

Jets vs. Patriots TNF Predictions

The Jets are 1-1 with a blowout loss to the Niners and a seven-point win against the Titans last week. Their offense has been better than the defense thus far, which flies in the face of expectations and history over the past few years.

The defense will have a hard time rebounding on Thursday as Jermaine Johnson is out with a torn Achilles, and C.J. Moseley is unlikely to play with a toe injury suffered last Sunday.

The Patriots pulled off the biggest upset of Week 1 when they took down the Cincinnati Bengals as 9.5-point underdogs. They followed that performance with a narrow 23-20 loss on the road against the Seattle Seahawks, who are yet to lose a game.

Jacoby Brissett is not covering himself in glory (135 yards per game, one touchdown), but he’s taken care of the ball and allowed his defense and running backs to carry the load. Rhamondre Stevenson and Antonio Gibson averaged a combined 157.5 rushing yards per game and are a major reason why the Pats rank fifth in average time of possession (excluding overtime).

This game is going to come down to which team gets off the field on third down with greater regularity.

Neither team is going to gain consistent chunk plays through the air. Brissett only has one completion longer than 17 yards, while Rodgers’ best downfield pass came on a free play (though he had a couple of nice connections with Garrett Wilson and Breece Hall last week).

Because of that, the battle in the trenches could be the deciding factor in the matchup. The Jets are just 22nd in EPA per play allowed, well below their usual standard, while the Patriots’ success on the ground and in holding teams to the second-fewest rushing yards per game gives them an identity to lean into.

As long as Brissett continues not to turn the ball over, we like the Patriots to cover the spread. Underdogs of at least 5.5 points are 9-1 against the spread, and New England is 2-0 ATS. Points also have more value in low-total games, and with an over/under of 38.5, the 6.5-point line represents 16.9 percent of the total.
