Published January 9, 2025
4 min read

The Jacksonville Jaguars are in the market for the heir apparent to former Super Bowl winning coach Doug Pederson, and Jaguars' next coach odds are heating up.

Tampa Bay Buccaneers offensive coordinator Liam Coen is a massive favorite to stay in Florida and accept the job, while everyone’s favorite prospective hire, Detroit Lions offensive coordinator Ben Johnson, is next in line.

Jacksonville has the fifth pick in the draft and is on the verge of a total franchise reboot, and they need to nail their hire.

Top Favorites for Jacksonville Jaguars Next Coach

Liam Coen (-350)

Cohen worked with the Los Angeles Rams for several years and made a name for himself as the offensive coordinator of a Buccaneers team that scored 29.5 points per game, which was fourth in the league, and gained 399.6 yards per game, which ranked third. Baker Mayfield had the best game of his career under Coen, and the Bucs finally fixed their running game woes after years of stagnation.

Ben Johnson (+125)

Johnson was arguably the hottest name on the coaching carousel last year and is the inarguable number-one. The Lions were first in scoring and second in total yardage and blended run with pass and creative play-designing in a way that even the best offense in the league couldn't quite figure out. Johnson, at 38, will continue the league-wide trend of trusting younger and innovative coaches to lead a franchise.

Joe Brady (+450)

Brady first found success as the passing game coordinator and wide receivers coach for the undefeated 2019 LSU team that captured a Heisman trophy (Joe Burrow) and a national championship. He then settled the Bills’ offense after a poor start to the year last year and has overseen an NFL MVP level year from Josh Allen while leading Buffalo to rank second in scoring and 10th in yardage.

What Happened to the Jacksonville Jaguars?

The Jaguars entered the 2024 season with a projected win total of 8.5 and the 17th-best odds to win the Super Bowl. Despite the Houston Texans taking a step back and only going 10-7, Jacksonville failed to capitalize on its situation and wound up just 4-13 and in contention for the first pick in the draft.

An injury to QB Trevor Lawrence played a major role in the decline of the team, but it was clear from early on that there were going to be major changes made in the offseason. The team never recovered from its four-game losing streak to start the season and wound up with an average scoring differential of -6.8 (25th).

The Jags only made the playoffs once since 2017 and aren’t known for their organizational competence. They have a quarterback who can at least flirt with being one of the 10 best in the NFL and a potential rookie All-Pro wide receiver in Brian Thomas Jr., but the roster needs a major overhaul beyond that.
