The Dallas Cowboys are officially in the market for a new head coach after it was revealed that they won’t extend current coach Mike McCarthy.
The Cowboys won 12 games in three straight seasons prior to going 7-10 in 2024. They haven’t been to the conference championship game since they won the Super Bowl in 1995 and are on a narrow timeline per the words of their owner, Jerry Jones, who said he wants to see his team finish as world champions before he passes on.
The odds to be the next Cowboys coach suggest a familiar face could be the man in charge next year—but who could that be? Here are the Cowboys next coach odds.

Once “Primetime” Deion Sanders and now Coach Prime, the greatest cornerback in NFL history, won a Super Bowl as a player with the Cowboys. He turned Colorado’s 1-11 football program from a dumpster fire to one that finished a respectable 9-4 just two seasons later, though they did not win a postseason game in his two seasons in charge. Sanders is known as a leader with the ability to connect with and hold his players accountable.
According to ESPN and social media buzz, Jerry Jones has already contacted Sanders regarding the vacant head coaching position, but no decision has been made.
Brady took over as the Bills’ OC in the middle of the 2023 campaign and immediately helped Josh Allen protect the football in a way that he hadn’t at any point of his career. He then helped Allen produce a top-two NFL MVP season in his first full year in the position and has them competing for the Super Bowl. He also fits the mold of a young, exciting, offensive coach that is in vogue.
Johnson is widely regarded as the best offensive coordinator in football, which is fitting, seeing as the Lions scored more points per game than any team in the league. Johnson has been selective with his interview process since making a name for himself but would likely want to leave the NFC North for his first head coaching job. Dallas also has a quarterback in place, which will be attractive for an offensive coach.
Reports broke on Jan. 13 that the Cowboys would not re-sign Mike McCarthy, allowing him to become a free agent and signaling they will be looking for a new head coach heading into the 2025 NFL season.
The Cowboys went 12-5 in three straight seasons from 2021-23, but injuries, a poorly constructed and deteriorated roster, and the losses of several coaches took their toll. The team will also find itself in a financial bind next season, as Dak Prescott, CeeDee Lamb, and Micah Parsons, the last of which still wants to become the highest-paid defensive player in league history, account for 54.31 percent of the team’s entire 2025 salary cap.
That said, the Cowboys' job is attractive. They have more money than everyone else, a terrific stadium, and stars at quarterback, receiver, and edge-rusher. The eventual hire will need to be prepared to deal with a meddling owner, but that doesn’t mean that Dallas can’t succeed.
