The Washington Commanders (12-5) will face the Philadelphia Eagles (14-3) for the third time this season in the NFC Championship Game on Sunday afternoon.

The winner of the matchup will advance to face either the Kansas City Chiefs or the Buffalo Bills in Super Bowl LIX. Philly came out on top when they met in the City of Brotherly Love in Week 11, while Washington found itself victorious the last time they met in D.C. in Week 16.

The Commanders shouldn’t be in this position. They were 25th in preseason Super Bowl odds. They have a rookie quarterback and retread coaches. They represent an organization synonymous with losing.

Road teams in the 2024-25 NFL playoffs are 2-8. Washington is responsible for both of those wins, and both came on the road against the three-seed Tampa Bay Buccaneers and the one-seed Detroit Lions.

Jayden Daniels has been the best quarterback in the playoffs, averaging 283.5 passing yards and 43.5 rushing yards per game to go with four touchdowns, no turnovers, and only one sack taken. He also led a game-winning drive as time expired in the Wild Card before handing the Lions what was only their third loss of the season in a 45-31 stunner.

Daniels struggled the first time he faced the Eagles, though that was also his first time playing on Thursday Night Football and at a time when he was dealing with bruised ribs. He finished that game 22/32 for 191 yards, a touchdown, and an interception, and he did not make an impact as a runner.

The rematch in D.C. was as wild of a game as there was in the NFL. Daniels went 24/39 for 259 yards, five touchdowns, one of which put the Commanders ahead with 10 seconds remaining, and two interceptions, and he ran nine times for 81 yards.

Washington opted to play much more zone coverage than it normally did during the divisional-round win over the Lions. Jahmyr Gibbs feasted to the tune of 175 total yards and two touchdowns on just 20 touches, while the porous defense produced its best showing of the season, forcing five turnovers.

Daniels has proven to be unflappable in the big moments, meaning the pressure is on the Commanders defense to show up ready for battle. Marshon Lattimore was only targeted once last week and finally seems healthy, which could afford them the opportunity to invest more resources into stopping the run.

If we’re talking about running the ball, there’s nobody better at this moment than Saquon Barkley. Fresh off a 2,000-yard rushing season in just 16 regular season games, Barkley already amassed 324 rushing yards and two touchdowns in two playoff games against the Green Bay Packers and the Los Angeles Rams.

In a league devoted to devaluing the running back position and elevating quarterback profiles, Barkley led a resurgent year for backs and was the best player on an already-established Philly offense. He also added a new calming presence and source of confidence for the team to rally behind, as shown by his 78-yard touchdown scamper in last week’s win over the Rams.

While Barkley was the engine of the offense, the defense held its opponents to a league-best 17.6 points per game. They can get pressure with just four rushers or bring extra bodies with confidence that their rookie corner tandem of Quinyon Mitchell and Cooper DeJean will hold up like established veterans.

That’s not to discount Darius Slay Jr. C.J. Gardner-Johnson, and Reed Blankenship, all of whom played leading roles in the Birds finishing with the second-best turnover margin per game.

Nakobe Dean’s season-ending injury weakened Philly’s linebacking corps, though revelation Zack Baun had an All-Pro year and was outstanding in both games against Washington.

With all of that said, there’s great concern surrounding quarterback Jalen Hurts. The 26-year-old averaged 129.5 passing and 53 rushing yards and had three total touchdowns in two playoff games, and he injured his knee in a way that almost totally eliminated his mobility during last week’s win.

Hurts was solid in the first meeting with the Commanders and barely played in the second before he left with a concussion.

The Commanders have to consider possibly lightening the box to allow Barkley to churn out consistent 5-6 yard gains but to protect them from explosive runs, which he conjures better than anybody in the league. Meanwhile, there’s a ton of pressure on their rookie QB to continue playing beyond his years and to elevate a roster that is significantly outmanned on paper.

Washington’s defense played its most impactful game of the year at the perfect time last week, but they need to be ready to sustain that effort against an emotionless machine that is the Philly ground game.

Daniels has been as clutch as anyone, and the Commanders are confident. This is the third meeting between the teams this season, and placing the spread at this line discredits what Washington has done—we’re not suggesting they’re the better bet to win, but we are saying they get our nod on the spread.

Here’s the thing… the Commanders kind of need Daniels to score two touchdowns to have hope. He’s more than capable of using his legs, but he threw at least two touchdowns in both playoff games and in seven straight games he both started and finished.

The Eagles only allowed more than two passing touchdowns in one game all year, but that was when Daniels lit them up for five in Week 16. The Washington coaching staff is committed to taking chances, and he will get his opportunities.

Hurts rumbled for a 44-yard score early in the Rams win and went over this line in five straight games, including both playoff games. However, his knee injury is nothing to sneeze at.

Marshon Lattimore was only targeted one time all game against the Lions, and that was on Detroit’s third play of the game.
