  • Lions cornerbacks allowed 18 receptions for 191 yards and a touchdown in Week 1.

  • Buccaneers running back Bucky Irving had nine carries for 62 yards in his debut, averaging 6.9 yards per carry.

  • Lions running back David Montgomery had 17 carries for 91 yards and a touchdown. He scored the game-winning touchdown in overtime.

The Detroit Lions and Tampa Bay Buccaneers both won in Week 1 and now the Lions will host the Buccaneers. These two teams played in the Divisional Round of the postseason last year, and the Lions came away victorious.

Buccaneers vs. Lions: My Pick

The Lions allowed quarterback Matthew Stafford to pass for 317 yards, and wide receiver Cooper Kupp caught 14 passes for 110 yards and a touchdown. The Buccaneers have an offense with several weapons, including the emergence of running back Bucky Irving. The Buccaneers will cover the spread here, as this secondary for the Lions didn’t prove enough in Week 1 to think they’re improved.

Buccaneers vs. Lions Predictions

The Buccaneers came away with a Week 1 37-20 win over the Washington Commanders. The offense for the Buccaneers looked excellent. Quarterback Baker Mayfield completed 24 of 30 passes for 289 yards and four touchdowns, and running back Bucky Irving was given nine carries in his debut for 62 yards. It’s hard to judge the defense as this was a rookie, Jayden Daniels, making his first start. He did rush for nearly 100 yards, though.

The Lions offense was OK, with quarterback Jared Goff completing 18 of 28 passes for 217 yards, one touchdown, and one interception. The running game came up big, with running back David Montgomery carrying the ball 17 times for 91 yards and one touchdown. Running back Jahmyr Gibbs had 11 carries for 40 yards and a touchdown. Wide receiver James Williams came up big with five receptions for 121 yards and a score.

We didn’t see a whole lot of Amon-Ra St. Brown (three catches for 13 yards). Cornerbacks Terrion Arnold, Carlton Davis III, and Amik Robertson combined to allow 18 catches for 191 yards and a touchdown. They defeated the Los Angeles Rams in Week 1 in overtime.

The Buccaneers will be without safety Antoine Winfield Jr., who’s out with a leg injury. Williams saw eight targets, including two on 20+ yard passes downfield. He caught one of those passes for 52 yards and a score. With Winfield Jr. out, it wouldn’t be surprising to see Williams targeted deep, especially if he matches up with Buccaneers cornerbacks Jamel Dean and potentially Tyrek Funderbunk with McCollum out and Hayes potentially out.

Expect to see some scoring here with two less-than-stellar secondaries and look for the Buccaneers to keep pace despite their woes. It’ll be intriguing to see how the Lions run the ball here. Montgomery and Gibbs each scored a touchdown, but the Buccaneers defense held running backs on the Commanders to 14 carries for 50 yards and a score. However, again, it was a rookie quarterback, so the numbers are understandably skewed.
