There have been several huge games already this 2023 NFL season. There has been a rematch of Super Bowl LVII between the Philadelphia Eagles and the Kansas City Chiefs. There have also been key divisional matchups that will help determine playoff seedings.
This Sunday will mark one of the biggest games yet for this season as the San Francisco 49ers (8-3) go on the road to take on the Philadelphia Eagles (10-1). This will be a matchup of the top two teams, not only in the NFC but in the entire NFL. This matchup will have huge implications for the NFC playoffs and potentially home-field advantage.
The San Francisco 49ers have started the season as one of the most dominant teams on both sides of the field. The 49ers possess a roster that is completely stacked with All-Pro talent on offense and defense. They started the season with a 5-0 record, including a dominant 42-10 win at home versus the Dallas Cowboys in week five. After that game, the 49ers suffered key injuries on the offensive side of the field, which caused them to lose three consecutive games. As the 49ers got healthy again, they proceeded to dominate again. Among those wins includes a 34-3 win on the road versus the Jacksonville Jaguars and their most recent victory on Thanksgiving with a 31-13 win over the Seattle Seahawks.
Much like San Francisco, the Philadelphia Eagles also started the season with a 5-0 overall record. The biggest difference between the four runners and the Eagles' hot start is that the Eagles weren't exactly the most dominant team on both sides of the field. This season, the Eagles have been keeping games more close than usual. Their first loss of the season was on the road against the New York Jets in week six with a 20-14 score. The Eagles were able to bounce back with huge wins in an incredibly tough schedule. Four of these five most recent wins have come against Miami, Dallas, Kansas City, and Buffalo.

The Philadelphia Eagles offense’ has certainly faced some of the most intense defenses in the league this season. On Sunday, the Eagles will face the biggest test yet on the offensive side of the ball as they take on the top-ranked scoring defense in the San Francisco 49ers.
The 49ers allow an average of 15.5 points per game. They are also ranked 5th in the league in total yards allowed per game (295.3) and second in rushing yards allowed per game (82).
Eagles’ quarterback Jalen Hurts hasn’t been as explosive as last season, but he has found ways to put points on the board. Hurts has accumulated 29 total touchdowns with 18 of them coming from the passing game and 11 on the ground.
The Eagles' offensive line needs to try and push for an efficient game for Hurts. Philadelphia may have to use the Brotherly Shove play more than usual to account for a significant amount of touchdowns.

This huge matchup between elite Super Bowl contenders in the NFC is going to come down to which quarterback will be the most efficient. 49ers quarterback Brock Purdy is going to have a serious edge in this game due to the opposing defense he must face.
The secondary of Philadelphia took a huge hit this past season as they lost not only key players but also established leaders. Philadelphia is ranked 29th in the league and passing yards allowed per game (255.7). Of the 30 touchdowns that Philadelphia’s defense has allowed this season, 23 of them have come from the passing game.
Purdy has thrown for 19 touchdowns this season. He will have a chance to account for a career-type performance with the Eagles possessing an elite run defense.

Keeping up with the offensive production for the 49ers, they are going to have to rely more on the passing game than on the ground. The biggest way that 49ers running back Christian McCaffrey will get to contribute in a big way is as a receiver.
The 49ers’ most dynamic pass catcher indigo Samuel has not had a lot of opportunities the season to account for huge games. In nine games this season he has caught 34 receptions for 474 yards.
This Sunday should be his best opportunity to account for a season-high performance against a bad Eagles’ pass defense.
