Winthrop have a great opportunity on their hands, against a hobbled Villanova squad. Still, Villanova are talented and have depth. While they are shorthanded, the Wildcats still have the supposed upper hand due to the strength of their in-conference performance.

The Winthrop Eagles are one of the most interesting teams going into the NCAA Tournament. They have the opportunity of a lifetime against Villanova, with their own strengths in their favor.
The Eagles may compete in one of the weaker conferences, but they are still a very capable team. Strong when rebounding the ball and more than passable shooting, Winthrop have plenty of weapons to test Villanova.
Don’t be mistaken, Villanova likely still outclass Winthrop. But should the Eagles force turnovers and maintain their Big South scoring rate, we may have an upset on their hands.
The Villanova Wildcats are still in a class above the Winthrop Eagles. While the Wildcats are dealing with some difficult injuries, lowering their overall team quality, there’s a clear difference in the quality of their conferences and play.
The Wildcats are still very good at taking care of the ball and are a capable shooting team. Their biggest issue will be ensuring that they take care of the ball, especially with playmaker Collin Gillespie unavailable.
Head coach Jay Wright will want the Wildcats to improve their shooting rate. Over their last four games, they’ve shot a paltry 23.8% from deep. That won’t cut it against the best in the nation.
Chandler Vaudrin has taken great strides for Winthrop this season and is a massive factor for their success. The junior has shown solid scoring ability while also leading his team in rebounds per game.
Vaudrin is averaging 12.2 points, 7.2 rebounds, and 6.9 assists per game. His shooting percentages are solid as well, 51.3% on two-point field goals and 37.5% on three-point field goals.
Vaudrin will face a tougher defense than he’s seen in the Big South. Maintaining his shooting percentages will be key for Winthrop’s victory, while also continuing to create for his teammates.
Sophomore forward Jeremiah Robinson-Earl will be depended on more than ever for the Wildcats in the NCAA Tournament. Missing a key player, Robinson-Earl will be asked to carry even more of the load for the Wildcats.
Robinson-Earl is averaging 15.7 points, 8.3 rebounds, and 1.0 steals on 49.3% from the three-point range. He makes one three per game, but on a 28.4% clip.
For Jay Wright’s team to overcome the odds, they’ll need Robinson-Earl to take on a starring role in the tournament.
