There will be more than just No. 6 Alabama’s (22-5, 11-3) top-ranked offense working against Mississippi State (19-8, 7-7) when the Bulldogs faceoff against the Crimson Tide in Tuscaloosa tonight. Mississippi State will have years of history working against them.
It has been quite some time since the Bulldogs have been able to go on the road and beat Alabama (almost a decade (Feb. 20, 2016)). With the Tide going 11-2 at home so far this season, Mississippi State will have its work cut out for them. However, Alabama is only 7-6 ATS at home this year.
Alabama comes into this game fresh off a 96-83 win over No. 17 Kentucky, but the Tide had lost their previous two (110-98 vs. Missouri and 94-85 vs. Auburn. While Mississippi State lost its last game, 93-87 to Oklahoma, they beat two ranked teams in their previous two by 10+ points.

The Bulldogs have not been the best team against the spread this season (12-15). However, they have done okay on the road this year (5-4 ATS) but poorly against ranked opponents (3-7 ATS). As for Bama, the Tide have gone 7-6 ATS at home, 9-5 ATS in SEC conference play, and 6-4 ATS vs. ranked opponents.
Both teams have favored the OVER when playing ranked opponents (Alabama—8-2; Mississippi State—6-4).
It would have been much easier to get excited about the Bulldogs and this game last week, following the win over Texas A&M. They were behind by one at the half, 31-30 but made the right adjustments during the break and dominated the second (40-23) en route to a 16-point win, 70-54.
With the defensive display they put on in that game, it was not hard to imagine Mississippi State competing with Alabama’s No. 1 ranked offense. They wouldn’t stop it, of course, but they’d certainly slow it down enough to make the game interesting.
But then they followed that game up with a 93-87 loss to Oklahoma. The 87 they scored was a good night for them on the offensive end, but giving up 93 to a decent Sooners offense was disappointing, to say the least.
The game was competitive at the break (37-34, Bulldogs), but then Oklahoma owned a second half that featured little to no defense (59-50, Sooners). If Oklahoma’s 83rd-ranked offense can put up 59 points in a half on Mississippi State, Alabama’s offense could set scoring records.
Sophomore guard Josh Hubbard leads the Bulldogs in scoring this season at 17.9 points per game. He had 19 in the loss to Oklahoma and 25 in the win over Texas A&M. He’s one of three players averaging in double digits for Mississippi State this season.

Everything was going fine for the Crimson Tide a couple of weeks ago. They were fresh off a dominant win over Texas (103-80) and didn’t have a care in the world. Yes, they had No. 1 Auburn on deck, but the game was at home. Surely, the No. 1 offense in the land could handle the Tigers, right?
Wrong. Yes, the Bama offense had a nice night with 85 points, but their lackluster defense allowed Auburn to score 94 points. But the pain didn’t end there. They followed that loss up with another, this time to No. 15 Missouri, 110-98.
Again, it was a great effort on the offensive end of the court, but a dreadful performance on the defensive end. They followed that loss up with a win over No. 17 Kentucky, 96-83. Bama overcame an early 12-point hole to take a seven-point lead into the break.
Alabama’s seniors came through for the Tide against the Wildcats. Senior guard Mark Sears scored 30 for the Tide and senior center Clifford Omoruyi put up a double-double with 11 points and 15 rebounds.`
However, it is fair of fans to wonder if Alabama’s defense is up to the challenge against Mississippi State. The Bulldogs have the No. 57 offense in the country, averaging 79.3 points per game. it put up 84 points against Alabama when these two teams met on Jan. 29.
Bama’s offense put up 88 points on the Bulldogs in that game on Mississippi State’s home court.

Mississippi State vs. Alabama Pick: OVER 169.5 points at -106 via FanDuel
Alabama will more than likely win this game. Yes, Mississippi State is a defensive-minded team with a decent offense. But while they’ll score some points against Bama, don’t count on them to slow the Tide offense down much in Tuscaloosa.
The Tide will probably cover the spread (-7.5), but the odds for it are -120 while the odds for betting the OVER (169.5) are -106. So, our pick is the OVER. However, if you’re feeling adventurous, combine Alabama -7.5 and the OVER in a same game parlay for +256 odds.
