Auburn has won six in a row after winning the SEC Tournament
Yale lost 79-74 when facing LSU in the First Round of the 2019 NCAA Tournament
Yale went 2-3 this season against teams in the tournament field while Auburn was 7-6
The Auburn Tigers are hoping to take the momentum of their SEC Tournament title and turn it into success in the NCAA Tournament. The Tigers failed to get past the first weekend in back-to-back seasons. However, they made a run to the Final Four as a no. 5 seed in 2019. Bruce Pearl is hoping for similar success as the no. 4 seed in the East Region this year. First up is the no. 13 seed Yale Bulldogs, who are champions of the Ivy League and scored a First Round upset back in 2016 when they knocked off Baylor.

Auburn’s season has had some ups and downs, which is to be expected in the rough and tumble SEC. But the Tigers found themselves late in the season and got hot. Including their three impressive wins in the SEC Tournament, the Tigers have won six in a row, including four wins against teams in the NCAA Tournament.
Bruce Pearl’s team has excelled at both ends of the floor, with Johni Broome being a big reason why. The Morehead State transfer averages 16.2 points, 8.4 rebounds, and 2.3 blocks per game. He took home SEC Tournament MVP honors after collecting two double-doubles in three games and is also one of the best defensive players in the SEC. Broome and Jaylin Williams, who had some uneven games during the SEC Tournament, might be the best forward tandem in the country.
While Auburn isn’t a guard-driven team, Pearl has plenty of backcourt depth at his disposal. The Tigers have five different guards who play at least 17.5 minutes per game and average over six points per game. All five are capable outside shooters and bring different skill sets to the table, allowing Pearl to substitute liberally and find the right combinations depending on the situation.
College basketball fans should know better than to sleep on the Ivy League in March. Yale survived a competitive three-team race in the Ivy League all season and emerged as the conference champion. They will be eager to get their shot against the SEC champs.
The Bulldogs will respond to Broome and Williams with their own multi-dimensional forward.
Danny Wolf is Yale’s leading scorer and rebounder, with 14.3 points and 9.8 rebounds per game. He also averaged 1.4 blocks per game and is a good passer, so he brings a well-rounded game to the table.
Meanwhile, Yale has four other players who average double figures, giving the Bulldogs a balanced attack. John Poulakidas and August Mahoney are both outstanding outside shooters who can change games if they get hot. The Bulldogs also lean a lot on Bez Mbeng, who is an experienced point guard who helps spread the ball around to Yale’s various scorers.
PICK: Auburn -13 (-108) at DraftKings
DraftKings lists Auburn as a 13-point favorite against Yale. Surely, the Tigers are a safe bet to win this game, although if Yale can hit some outside shots, the Bulldogs have a chance to make things interesting. One trend worth mentioning is that Auburn was 8-2 against the spread this season, when the Tigers were favored by more than 10 points but less than 20 points. They managed to win comfortably in lopsided matchups. At the same time, Yale suffered 15-point losses against both Gonzaga and Kansas, failing to stay close with top-notch teams. That’s a strong indicator that the Tigers will be able to win and cover against the Ivy League champs.
