South Carolina beat an SEC opponent, Kentucky, 31-6 last week
LSU QB Garrett Nussmeier threw six touchdowns in Week 2
The two teams haven’t played since LSU won 52-24 in 2020
College GameDay is heading to Columbia for the game of the week as the South Carolina Gamecocks prepare to host the No. 16 LSU Tigers.
USC is 2-0 and dismantled Kentucky 31-6 last week, producing a much better performance than they did during a four-point opening-week win against Old Dominion. LSU, meanwhile, bounced back from a one-score loss to ranked USC with a 44-21 win against Nicholls.
Neither one of these teams are expected to contend for anything significant in a loaded SEC competition, but both are under the microscope in a matchup that could determine the trajectory of the rest of their seasons.
Here, we will break down the betting odds and share our favorite South Carolina vs. LSU picks.

Teams | Spread | Moneyline | Total |
---|---|---|---|
No. 16 LSU | -7 (-110) | -250 | Over 50.5 (-110) |
South Carolina | +7 (-110) | +210 | Under 50.5 (-110) |
South Carolina is not going to look to push the ball down the field. QB LaNorris Sellers averaged 140 passing yards and threw two touchdowns and one interception in his first two games. He also ran 30 times (only 1.9 yards per carry) compared to attempting 37 passes across the two outings.
While the Gamecocks’ offensive numbers did not impress in either of their games, their defense shut the doors on Kentucky. They forced two Wildcats QBs to combine for 6/17, just 44 passing yards, and two interceptions, and they allowed just over 3.0 yards per carry. They also generated five sacks and an impressive 11 tackles for loss.
LSU does not have the same offensive limitations as its opponent. Junior QB Garrett Nussmeier eclipsed 300 yards in both games and racked up eight touchdowns and only one interception in a pass-happy offense.
The Tigers’ biggest concerns are on defense. They ranked poorly in most defensive metrics in 2023 and just surrendered 21 points to Nicholls, which only managed 17 against Louisiana Tech the week before. They’re 117th of 131 schools in yards allowed per play and 75th defensive EPA per play.

My Pick: South Carolina +7 (-110) at BetMGM
South Carolina’s offense hasn’t made many highlight plays, but it still ranks 28th in offensive EPA per play. They’ll also get to go against a Tigers defense that is average against the pass and awful against the run.
LSU also has one of the worst ground games in the country thus far, meaning it will be hard for them to control the clock. Both teams struggle (South Carolina more so than LSU) on third down, and that will be an important situation to monitor.
With the home crowd behind them, we believe that the Gamecocks can stay within the full touchdown and cover the spread.
