  • Ohio State and Oregon are listed near the top of the oddsboard for the National Championship

  • Ohio State’s offense ranks top-25 in Rush Success Rate, PPA, and Explosiveness

Even after securing the number one seed, Oregon fans can’t help but groan at the thought of them having to play one of the best teams in the nation per their preseason odds to win the National Championship in the quarterfinals. While their win over them earlier in the year was impressive, Ohio State is clicking on all cylinders and possess more than enough advantages on both sides of the ball to get their revenge.

Ohio State vs Oregon Predictions

Ohio State vs. Oregon My Pick

Since their contest against each other earlier in the year, the Oregon front seven has continued to trend in the wrong direction. Once projected to be one of the more formidable units in the league, the Ducks' defense has severely underwhelmed as they enter the quarterfinals ranked near dead last in Def Rush PPA and Explosiveness. That opens the door for the Buckeyes to sustain drives down the field by abusing the run, opening up gaps in the Ducks' coverage when they are forced to creep toward the middle.

Ohio State vs. Oregon Predictions

Ohio State Preview

Outside of an extremely underwhelming performance against the Michigan Wolverines, the Ohio State Buckeyes in large part have looked like one of the best teams in the nation this season. Their latest performance against Tennessee has helped strengthen their case for being one of the projected favorites to win the National Championship as Ohio State thumped the Volunteers 42-17.

Not only did Will Howard have no issue with picking apart the Vols' gaps in coverage, but TreyVeyon Henderson also gave them support on the ground by averaging eight yards per carry. Henderson, along with Quinshon Judkins, has been a formidable duo this season as they led the Buckeyes to top-25 marks in Rush Success Rate, PPA, and Explosiveness. Expect another heavy dose of the run on Wednesday as the Ducks' front seven ranks near dead last in Def Rush PPA and Explosiveness.

Should Henderson and Judkins hit the ground running and command defensive attention towards the box, then the Buckeyes deep group of receivers will have more room to work with to help create separation from the Ducks coverage. This will lead to higher quality passing lanes for Howard to exploit, increasing the likelihood of Ohio State being able to move the ball down the field and into scoring territory at a consistent rate.

Oregon Preview

After winning the Big Ten Conference Championship in their first year in the conference, the Oregon Ducks also secured the first overall seed and a bye for the first round of the playoffs. Unfortunately for Oregon, it seems like they have drawn the short end of the stick as they are set to face off against the Ohio State Buckeyes in their playoff debut.

Maintaining their high marks on offense may be a struggle for the Ducks as they face off against a Buckeyes defense who excels at limiting opposing offensive production when in the middle of the field. Heading into Wednesday, the Buckeyes defense ranks 15th in Def Pass Success Rate and 18th in Def Rush Success Rate. That may lead to an uptick in stalled-out drives as the Ducks' lack of explosiveness allows the Buckeyes to cheat up in coverage and limit their short throws for minimal gains.

To make matters worse for the Ducks, their defensive woes with stopping the run are poised to persist as previously mentioned. Not only does this give the Buckeyes offense a clear path for success in their efforts of sustaining drives down the field, but it also widens the gaps in the Ducks coverage should Oregon have to stack the box. Bet the Buckeyes to get their revenge at the key number of -3 or better.
