Michigan vs. Indiana Picks, Predictions and Odds: Back the Hoosiers at a Key Number

  • Indiana was ranked eighth overall in the initial CFB playoff rankings

  • Kurtis Rourke threw for 263 yards and 4 touchdowns in his return from injury

  • Michigan’s secondary ranks below league average in Def Pass Success Rate, PPA, and Explosiveness

After entering the year with a win total of 5.5, the Indiana Hoosiers continue to defy preseason expectations by rattling off nine straight wins. Their hot start to the season has resulted in them getting the eighth seed in the initial CFB playoff rankings, as well as putting themselves in the driver's seat for a Big Ten Conference Championship berth. With Michigan’s secondary continuing to regress, Indiana should have no issue with setting a scoring pace too fast for the Wolverines to keep up with.

Michigan vs. Indiana My Pick

While Indiana’s strength of schedule is concerning, it’s hard to ignore how impressive their metrics have been while dismantling every opponent they have faced. Heading into Saturday, Indiana’s offense ranks top-10 in Success Rate and Finishing Drives, indicating they have had no issue with moving the ball down the field and capitalizing on their scoring opportunities. With Michigan’s defense continuing to regress, expect Kurtis Rourke to maintain his high level of play and light up the scoreboard in the process.

Michigan vs. Indiana Predictions

Michigan Preview

It’s been an underwhelming season for the reigning national champions as the Michigan Wolverines are currently 3-3 in Big Ten play and 5-4 overall. Roster turnover, inconsistent quarterback play, and injuries have derailed the Wolverines momentum, resulting in underwhelming metrics on both sides of the ball. Especially on defense as the Wolverines enter the weekend ranked 43rd in Def Success Rate, 66th in Finishing Drives, 73rd in Havoc, and 114th in Explosiveness.

Their inability to defend against the pass has played a major role in their underwhelming marks on defense as their secondary ranks below league average across the board in Def Pass Success Rate, PPA, and Explosiveness. Star cornerback and potential first round pick Will Johnson is also still listed as questionable on the injury report while dealing with a lower body injury the past few weeks.

Even if Johnson is able to give it a go, Michigan’s secondary will have their hands full against the high powered Indiana pass attack as Kurtis Rourke has led the Hoosiers to top overall marks in Pass Success Rate and PPA. Rourke has been steadily building a case for the Heisman award as his play has resulted in 2,204 passing yards, 19 passing touchdowns, and just 3 interceptions. With the Wolverines struggling in coverage, expect Rourke to face minimal resistance in his efforts of getting into scoring position.

Indiana Preview

While Kurtis Rourke and Indiana’s offense hogs most of the spotlight during their hot stretch of play, their defense has been equally as productive as they enter the contest ranked 13th overall in Def Success Rate, 8th in Explosiveness, 22nd in Havoc, and 51st in Finishing Drives. The Hoosiers are very well balanced as they excel at defending against both areas of the offense when in the middle of the field, ranking top-30 in Def Pass and Rush Success Rate.

Heading into Saturday, Indiana’s defense will have the opportunity to continue to play at a high level as Michigan’s one dimensional offense has struggled with moving the ball down the field. Especially when they suffer from a lack of consistent quarterback play, entering the contest ranked 93rd in Pass Success Rate, 106th in PPA, and 67th in Explosiveness. Starting quarterback Davis Warren has struggled with avoiding turnover worthy plays, throwing six interceptions while generating just five touchdown passes.

With Warren incapable of stretching out the coverage, Indiana’s defense will have the opportunity to stack the box at a high rate to help neutralize Michigan’s rush production. The Hoosiers were already a dominant run stopping unit as their high marks in Def Rush Success Rate and PPA indicate, now putting themselves in a position to completely shut down the run by sending more bodies into the trenches.
