  • The Rainbow Warriors have not made a bowl game since 2020

  • Delaware State missed their flight to Hawaii on Tuesday and are scrambling to get back on track

Capping off a four game slate for College Football week 0, the Hawaii Rainbow Warriors host the Delaware State Hornets in their season opener. Hawaii looks to take a much-needed step forward after bringing back a bulk of their production that finished 5-7 last season, getting the opportunity to get off to a hot start against a lowly FCS opponent. Every win is needed for Hawaii in their efforts of snapping their streak of missing out on every bowl season since 2020, coming into the year with a win total of 5.5 juiced towards the under.

Hawaii vs. Delaware State My Pick

Even though the Rainbow Warriors finished last season ranked well below average in most key metrics, they are still light years better than the Delaware State Hornets who come into the contest listed as a +39.5 underdog. While Hawaii should have no issue with getting the win, taking their first quarter spread helps eliminate late-game variance as they are expected to not show anything before their matchup against UCLA. Back Hawaii to get off to a hot start, running up the score early on a defense that gave up a combined 119 points in their two contests against FBS opponents last season.

Hawaii vs. Delaware State Predictions

Hawaii

With Hawaii originally supposed to be playing Oregon in this spot, their fans took a sigh of relief after the Ducks moved to the Big Ten and reshuffled their schedule. With Delaware State filling the void, the Rainbow Warriors go from being a +38.5 underdog against the Ducks to a -39.5 favorite over the Hornets to open up their season. The schedule change bodes especially well in their efforts of snapping their bowl streak, looking to make their first bowl game since 2020.

In order for them to do so, Hawaii will need to maximize on their near-guaranteed projected wins as they come into the year with a preseason win total of 5.5. Delaware State fits the mold for a team that Hawaii should put away early, fielding far better talent on both sides of the field. Even after finishing last season ranked 82nd in Off Success Rate and 113th in Finishing Drives, the Rainbow Warriors should have no issue with moving the ball down the field against a horrific Hornets defense.

Defensive production was practically non-existent for Delaware State in their two contests against FBS opponents last season, conceding 57 points and 525 total yards to Army while giving up another 62 points and 646 yards to Miami-OH. With head coach Timmy Chang already making it known they are showing nothing in this contest in a lookahead spot against UCLA while calling a conservative game script, expect a massive drop-off in production after Hawaii clocks in a few scores against minimal resistance.

Delaware State

It’s already been a turbulent week for the Delaware State Hornets heading into their first game of the season against Hawaii, missing their flight on Tuesday and now scrambling to find another. With each passing hour, the Hornets lose out on much-needed time to ward off jet lag while simultaneously missing out on pregame practices as well.

The Hornets can ill-afford to take on any form of negative outside factors as they are already way in over their head against an FBS opponent. They failed to stop Army and Miami-OH on the ground and through the air last season, getting routinely beat by equally underwhelming offenses.

Since opening as a -35.5 favorite, bettors have been all over the Rainbow Warriors and have shot the line up to as high as -39.5. The Hornets will get blown out, but late game variance makes the full game spread a pass as the Warriors will look to pull their starters out of the game early in the contest. That shifts our attention towards the 1Q spread as we get the benefit of backing Hawaii’s starters who will move the ball down the field with ease while their defense quickly gets the Hornets off the field in three and outs.
