  • Clemson is the new favorite to win the ACC after Florida State lost to Georgia Tech

  • Georgia is dealing with plenty of injuries and suspensions on both sides of the ball

Week one kicks off with a star-studded showdown as the Georgia Bulldogs are set to battle it out against the Clemson Tigers. Georgia enters the year as the betting favorites to win the National Championship while Clemson finds themselves at the top of the oddsboard to win the ACC Championship after Florida State lost to Georgia Tech in week zero. With both defenses in a position to limit each other's passing production while draining the clock with their ground game, expect a minimal amount of points to be put up on the board.

Georgia vs. Clemson Pick

After just missing out on the playoffs last season, the Georgia Bulldogs revenge tour starts with a highly anticipated matchup against the Clemson Tigers who are also looking to redeem themselves after a lackluster 2023 campaign. Generating consistent offensive production was a struggle for the Tigers last year, now having to find answers in a hurry against one of the more formidable defenses in the league. Factor in Georgia dealing with an abundance of injuries and suspensions, and week one’s contest between the two playoff contenders may feature a limited number of scoring opportunities.

Georgia vs. Clemson Predictions

Georgia Bulldogs

After getting left out of the playoffs last year, the Georgia Bulldogs enter the new season with revenge on their mind as are listed as the preseason betting favorites to win the National Championship. They certainly have the roster to make a deep run in the expanded playoffs, returning Heisman contender Carson Beck to captain an offense that finished last year ranked fifth overall in Off Success Rate and Finishing Drives.

The issue for Beck and the Georgia offense heading into their contest against the Tigers is that their offense is dealing with an abundance of injuries and suspensions sustained throughout the offseason. Their rush production is especially prone to taking a major step back as they will be without starting running back Trevor Etienne due to suspension while his backup Roderick Robinson II is dealing with an injury.

Without consistent rush production, the Bulldogs offense will be prone to stalling out while being too reliant on their pass attack. Georgia’s offense revolves around quick throws to get their playmakers out in space, playing right into the Tigers hands as their defense excels at smothering the flats and middle of the field. With Clemson’s defense projected to sustain their top five marks in Def Pass Success Rate and PPA, expect Georgia to struggle with consistently moving the ball down the field and into scoring position.

Clemson Tigers

While the Clemson Tigers do not possess the same ceiling as the Georgia Bulldogs in terms of being able to win the National Championship, they are more than capable of making the playoffs via winning the ACC or grabbing a wildcard spot. They are currently the betting favorites to win the ACC as of writing, getting a bump up the oddsboard after the Florida State Seminoles lost to Georgia Tech in week zero.

Against Georgia, Clemson will get an opportunity to show they can contend with the best of them. Especially while getting the benefit of facing off against a Georgia offense that is dealing with injuries and suspensions, making it easier to scheme against them as Georgia’s plan of attack may rely on a heavier dose of the pass. Defending the pass was a strength for the Tigers defense last season, excelling at letting nothing behind them while stopping opposing pass catchers at the point of contact.

With Clemson’s secondary in a position to stall out Georgia’s pass attack, value shades towards the under as the Tigers offense will equally struggle with moving the ball down the field. Like Clemson, Georgia’s defense also excels at limiting opposing pass production as they consistently rank near the top of the board in Def Pass Success Rate, PPA, and Explosiveness. With Klubnik struggling to stretch out Georgia’s defense due to his sporadic throwing ability, expect their ground game to be bottled up against a stacked box.
