Following Week 12, the field of viable ACC Championship contenders has shrunk to three: Miami (FL), SMU, and Clemson.
There are no other teams with a path to the championship, as these teams all have one loss or less in the AFC and an overall record of two wins or less.
Below, I’ll examine these remaining teams, look back at the conference's history, and more.

The Hurricanes had a Week 12 bye, which was certainly needed as they lost their first game of the season in Week 11 on the road against the Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets.
In that game, quarterback Cam Ward completed 25 of 39 passes for 348 yards and three touchdowns, but the defense couldn’t stop the run.
Georgia Tech ran for 271 yards and controlled the time of possession with 34 minutes and 49 seconds.
Still, Miami has the best offense in the country, averaging 544.8 yards per game and 368.2 passing yards, which leads the nation.
Ward leads the country in passing yards and passing touchdowns.
They finish the year against Wake Forest and Syracuse, but this defense needs to improve quickly to compete with the more notable College Football Playoff teams, such as Ohio State or even Notre Dame.
Notre Dame is a realistic first-round matchup, and its rushing attack, like Georgia Tech's, could be an issue for Miami.
They win the ACC, but I’m more concerned about the College Football Playoff.

SMU is undefeated in the ACC after knocking off Boston College 38-28 last week.
Quarterback Kevin Jennings threw for 298 yards, three touchdowns, and an interception.
Running back Brashard Smith added 18 carries for 120 yards and a touchdown.
SMU averages 39.9 points per game, tied for sixth in the nation. Meanwhile, their defense allows 22.4.
They’re on track to face Miami in the ACC title game, but that could be a problem for them.
They allow 348.6 passing yards per game, and Ward is the most productive signal-caller in the country.
They finish off the season against Virginia and California.

If Miami and SMU win out, Clemson is out of the ACC title game. They’re 8-2. Right now, they’re 7-1 in the ACC, which is better than Miami’s 5-1 line, but as mentioned, Miami has Wake Forest and Syracuse on the docket.
Clemson needs Miami to lose one of these next two games.
Syracuse is far from a layup.
That said, Clemson needs to win out against Citadel and South Carolina. South Carolina is a nationally-ranked team heading into Week 12.
Clemson beat Pittsburgh 24-20 in Week 12. It required a Cade Klubnik 50-yard touchdown run to take the lead with 1:16 to go.
Again, Clemson needs to win out, and Miami needs to lose a game, which I don’t think will happen.

Miami suffered their first loss of the season to Georgia Tech. Now, they need to win out to secure a spot in the ACC Championship. They’ll take on another high-octane passing attack in Syracuse to close out the season.
Syracuse is third in the country, averaging 350.7 passing yards per game.
SMU finishes up the season against Virginia and California. If they win out, they’ll make the ACC title game. It’s just a matter of who they’ll play.
SMU is a 9.5-point favorite on the road against Virginia.
Taking on Citadel, Clemson is a 50.5-point favorite.
Yes, 50.5 points.
They need Miami to lose.
Miami is a 23.5-point favorite against Wake Forest. They’re also favored against Syracuse by 9.5 points.

The Seminoles won the ACC despite Travis's injury. This conference now has 17 teams, and the increased competition could help break the streak of Clemson and Florida State wins. Since 2010, Florida State and Clemson have won all but two ACC titles. The only exceptions were Pitt in 2021 and Virginia Tech in 2010.
Clemson’s 9-4 record was their worst in the Dabo Swinney era. This was massive for the ACC, as Clemson has won seven of the last nine ACC conference titles.
