Luka Doncic has been the standout player of the Western Conference Finals, justifying his place as the favorite to win the Earvin ‘Magic’ Johnson Award. Despite losing Game 4 and the chance at a sweep, Doncic contributed 28 points, 15 rebounds, and ten assists while struggling from the field. Doncic has the productivity of a Conference Finals MVP winner, and it’ll just be up to him to help Dallas close out the series and secure the award for himself.
Anthony Edwards looked unstoppable through the early rounds of the NBA Playoffs. Still, as the postseason has worn on, he’s struggled. Edwards has had his most challenging series against the Mavericks, averaging 22.0 points, 8.3 rebounds, and 8.0 assists on 38.6% from the field. His Game 4 performance was classic, though, as he put up 29 points, ten rebounds, and nine assists on 44.0% shooting in the evening to stave off elimination. The odds are against Edwards’ team to salvage a series win, but if he can perform at his best, the Timberwolves have a chance at making history.
Karl-Anthony Towns has struggled through his Western Conference Finals series against the Dallas Mavericks. In his first three games, all losses, Towns averaged 15.0 points, 8.3 rebounds, and 1.0 threes per game on 27.8% shooting and 13.6% from three. Bouncing back in Game 4 with 25 points and four threes on nine of 13 shooting, Towns made his most substantial claim for West Finals MVP. It’s still a long road from here, but Towns is finally off on the right foot.
Kyrie Irving has been excellent for the Mavericks through the postseason, supporting Luka Doncic’s efforts as a secondary contributor when needed. Through Dallas’ three-game win streak to open the West Finals, he’s averaged 27.7 points, 4.7 assists, and 2.3 threes on 52.5% from the field and 43.8% from deep. However, he struggled in Game 4, their first loss of the West Finals, putting up just 16 points on 33.3% shooting. Irving has the quality to take over and win a Conference Finals MVP, but his role as secondary playmaker to Luka Doncic makes it challenging to sustain a competitive impact.
