Minnesota Timberwolves vs. Los Angeles Lakers Betting Pick

While the Los Angeles Lakers struggled in Game 1, it’s not time for them to panic. The combination of Luka Doncic and LeBron James is playoff-proven, and they’ll be locked in come Tuesday night. Also, the Timberwolves received excellent contributions from McDaniels and Reid, but their near-flawless shooting isn’t sustainable. Look for the Lakers to level the series and for their role players to step up as they stare down an 0-2 deficit.

Minnesota Timberwolves Preview

The Minnesota Timberwolves overcame the odds in their last match, taking Game 1 against the Lakers and stealing away homecourt advantage. Behind an all-around team effort and Anthony Edwards’ sharpshooting, the Timberwolves can go up 2-0 on the star-studded Lakers.

Minnesota is known for its defense, but they were just as potent on offense in Game 1. They will try to build on a game in which they scored 117 points on 51.2% from the field and 50.0% from three on 21 made threes. The Timberwolves also dominated the rebounding battle, 44 to 38, while their bench outscored the Lakers 43 to 13.

The Timberwolves were inconsistent against the spread this season, posting a 40-42-1 ATS Record, ranking them 18th in the NBA. They earned a 48.8% cover percentage, a +5.2 margin of victory, and a +0.8 ATS +/- this season. In addition to being the outright winner in the last match (+171), the Timberwolves covered the spread in Game 1 against the Lakers (+4.5).

Anthony Edwards claimed the headlines after Game 1 against the Lakers, outdueling fellow All-Star Luka Doncic. Edwards put up 22 points, nine assists, eight rebounds, and four made threes despite shooting just 8-of-22 on the night. Going into Game 2, don’t overlook role players, Jaden McDaniels and Naz Reid, as the pair combined for 48 points in the opening game of the series.

Los Angeles Lakers Preview

The Los Angeles Lakers entered their first-round series against the Timberwolves with high expectations, but a homecourt blowout has reset their outlook. Despite a strong showing from their star men, the Lakers need their role players to step up if they hope to hit the road 1-1 for Game 3.

Despite the Lakers’ pace and offense quality, they couldn’t score efficiently in Game 1. Outscored by 22 on the night, the Lakers scored just 95 points on 39.8% from the field and 36.6% from three. They need more from their supporting cast, as James, Doncic, and Reaves accounted for 75% of the team’s scoring output.

The Lakers were one of the NBA’s stronger teams against the spread this year, posting a 45-36-2 ATS Record, ranking them sixth in the NBA. They’ve earned a 55.6% cover percentage, a +0.9 margin of victory, and a -0.7 ATS +/- this season. The Lakers failed against the spread, the total, and the moneyline in their last match and their last three overall.

A bright spot for the Lakers in their Game 1 blowout was the play of Luka Doncic. In his Lakers playoff debut, Doncic posted 37 points, eight rebounds, and five made threes. If there’s anywhere he can improve, Doncic could do more to create for his teammates, as he notched just one assist on the evening.
