This Timberwolves team is not the same one that made a run to the Western Conference Finals last year. They no longer have the best defense in the league and are just 13th in defensive rating, though they only allowed 3.1 points per 100 possessions more than they did in 2023-24.
Unfortunately for them, their 114.0 offensive rating is 12th in the NBA and down 0.6 points from where it was last season as well.
That was to be expected to a certain extent. The subtraction of the long-tenured Karl-Anthony Towns was going to have a tangible impact on Minnesota’s style of play and chemistry, which is why the early-season part of the schedule is more about the Wolves figuring out who they are rather than producing elite performances.
One player who is already at an elite level is Anthony Edwards, who averaged 27.3 points, 5.6 rebounds, and 3.0 assists while shooting 45 percent from three on the third-most attempts per game (11.4).
Newcomer Julius Randle also settled in well, averaging 21.4 points, 6.4 rebounds, and 4.7 assists and 46.4 percent from three-point territory.
One of the Wolves’ biggest strengths is its bench depth with Naz Reid, Nickeil Alexander-Walker, Donte DiVincenzo, and others. They have the fourth-best bench net rating in the league and have the potential to climb even higher.
Although Minnesota isn’t playing outstanding defense overall, it held opponents to a lowly 31.3 percent shooting from three-point territory, which is pivotal in the modern age of basketball.

The Bulls have done a nice job becoming less dependent on their star players to create all of their offense and getting more touches to everyone in their starting five.
Unfortunately for them, that has not translated to efficient offense as they scored the third-fewest points per 100 possessions in the league (106.1). They also managed a league-average defensive rating of 112.8.
Zach LaVine and Nikola Vucevic both averaged more than 20 points, while Coby White is close behind at 19 per game. Josh Giddey, in his first season with the team, managed a solid 14.1 points, 6.6 rebounds, and 6.3 assists while shooting 42.9 percent from beyond the arc.
Rebounding isn’t normally a strength of this team as they’re just 13th in rebound rate. However, the Timberwolves are only 25th in that category, so it could be a part of the game they can exploit in this matchup.
One of the biggest questions is how they will do at the point of attack.
None of LaVine, Giddey, or White are great defenders and will struggle to keep someone as explosive as Anthony Edwards in front of them and out of the lane.
The Bulls are also 10th in three-point percentage (36.9) but are going to need to use their passing and off-ball movement to create open looks against a defense that specializes in shutting down the perimeter.

Timberwolves vs. Bulls pick: Timberwolves -7.5 (110) at BetMGM
The Bulls are doing some interesting things with their offense but haven’t necessarily hit their rhythm just yet.
The Timberwolves are similar in that they aren’t yet a well-oiled machine, but they have a better defense, and their star players performed at a higher level.
With that in mind and considering that the Bulls are on the second night of a back-to-back, we expect the Timberwolves to walk out of the United Center with a sizable win on Thursday.
