Canada enters the 2024 Paris Olympics as the top contender to win Gold at the 2024 Paris Olympics. The only team ahead of them in the odds table is the favorites, the United States, which has dominated the competition since 2004. After some recent success on the international stage, Canada hopes they can maintain their success.
Canada will compete in Group A with Australia, Greece, and Spain. Group A is expected to be difficult for Canada, as its three opponents have been top competitors on the world stage for many years. The group also featuresseveral of current and former NBA players, such as Giannis Antetokounmpo (Greece), Patty Mills (Australia), and Rudy Fernandez (Spain), who will be familiar with their style.
Despite the quality of Canada’s roster, it’s a young team that has not had much time together as a unit. They also lack frontcourt depth, as Zach Edey and Andrew Wiggins could not join the team for this Olympic run. Despite their star power, it won’t be an easy route to the podium for Canada—especially for the top spot and a gold medal.

July 30, 7:30 AM EST: Canada vs Australia
August 2, 3:00 PM EST: Canada vs Spain
Canada was among the first basketball competitors at the Summer Olympics. They’ve participated in nine Olympic Games and 15 FIBA World Cups. However, Canada only earned two medals, one at the Olympics (silver) and one at the FIBA World Cup (bronze).
While Canada was one of the original competitors at the Olympics, it failed to replicate its success post-World War II until 1976, when it hosted in Montreal and finished fourth. They finished fourth again in 1984 and sixth in 1988, but they only qualified for the Summer Games once between 1992 and 2020.
After narrowly missing the 2020 Olympics through the Olympic Qualifying Tournament, Canada experienced a resurgence in its basketball program. Led by a team of NBA stars, Canada shocked the world by defeating the United States and finishing third in the 2023 FIBA World Cup. Their finish at the FIBA World Cup, as the top Americas region team, earned them a place at the 2024 Paris Olympics.
When Canada begins its 2024 Olympic campaign, it will field its most talented roster. With ten NBA players, two veteran national team members, and an ambitious coach in Jordi Fernandez, Team Canada is rightly seen as one of the tournament’s top teams.
