The San Antonio Spurs will hit the road for a battle with the reigning Western Conference regular-season champions, the Oklahoma City Thunder
Victor Wembanyama’s second season in the NBA started 1-2 with the lone win coming against the Houston Rockets. The superstar sophomore was joined by several new pieces in the offseason, though they have not yet made the desired impact.
The Thunder are 3-0 and won all of their games by at least 15 points despite shooting a horrific percentage from three. Their ceiling is significantly higher than what they hit thus far, which should be terrifying for the rest of the league.
Here, we will review the betting odds and share our favorite picks for the Spurs vs. Thunder matchup.
The Spurs are 1-2 against the spread and 0-1 ATS on the road. They’ve been underdogs in every game they played thus far.
The Thunder 3-0 ATS, 2-0 ATS as the favorite, and 1-0 ATS at home. They also have the second-highest average scoring margin at +19.3 points per game.

The Spurs are going to need Wembanyama to become one of the 10 best players in the league night in and night out for them to have a chance at closing in on a playoff spot.
The starting lineup, which also features Julian Champagnie, Harrison Barnes, Jeremy Sochan, and Chris Paul, is not built to run in transition or take lots of three-pointers, which limits their ability to win games on the back of their system.
That said, Paul’s presence should ensure that the young Frenchman gets the ball more than he did last year, when a youthful and chaotic Spurs squad often failed to find him in favorable positions.
It’s early, but the Spurs are 18th in defensive and 19th in offensive rating. Those numbers, while not impressive, are better than they were last year. One of their biggest hindrances is their carelessness with the basketball as they rank 26th in turnover percentage.
Personnel issues or not, Gregg Popovich needs to create more three-point looks for this team. They’re 23rd in makes (10) and 28th in attempts (29.7) per game.
Wemby also failed to score more than 17 points in two of three games thus far and averaged 20 points, 12 rebounds, and 2.7 blocks on 22.2 percent three-point shooting.

The Thunder are a joy to watch. They fly all over the court and have the youthful energy one would expect from one of the youngest teams in the Association.
OKC’s defensive rating through three games is an unbelievable 90.8 which, if held through the entire season, would be the best in NBA history.
The team’s 27.6 percent shooting from three-point land (second-worst) has doomed it to 18th in offensive rating, but again, they still won all of their games in blowouts.
Shai Gilgeous-Alexander looks more comfortable shooting the ball from three. He averaged 7.7 long-range attempts per game, well above his career-high of 5.3 per game set in 2021-22. His ability to make these shots will force opposing defenses to expand out of the painted area, which will create more open driving and cutting lanes.
Chet Holmgren, Lu Dort, and Alex Caruso are going to make it tough for anyone to score whenever they’re engaged (which is nearly all the time). The Thunder also create lots of high-efficiency shots with their drive-and-kick style.

Spurs vs. Thunder pick: Thunder -13.5 (-110) at BetMGM
This is a clear mismatch between a team with chemistry and ability, and another that is looking for its rhythm and isn’t settled in any way.
Wembanyama and Holmgren have a rivalry, although they averaged just about their season numbers in three head-to-head showdowns last year.
The Thunder’s ceiling with this group is scary. They shot the three worse than 28 teams and still covered this line against the Denver Nuggets, Chicago Bulls, and Atlanta Hawks, and they should be able to do the same as long as they make a few more long-rangers.
