The Phoenix Suns and the Oklahoma City Thunder aim to rebound from recent losses, each facing challenges – the Thunder as a developing team and the Suns coping with early-season injuries. While there's plenty of time in the season, both teams strive for higher standings in the short term.
The Thunder excel offensively, ranking 9th in points per game (116.4), 3rd in field goal percentage (49.0%), and 7th in three-point shooting (37.6%). Led by Shai Gilgeous-Alexander, averaging 28.8 points, the team boasts a balanced attack with four other starters averaging over 12.0 points per game. All five of the Thunder's regular starters are posting double-digit points averages.
In contrast, the Suns' offensive production is more modest, averaging 113.2 points (15th in the NBA) and shooting 46.1% from the field. With Booker and Beal sidelined, Durant has taken the lead, scoring 30.2 points per game.
Both teams face defensive challenges, with Phoenix ranking in the bottom third in points allowed per game. Regarding injuries, Kenrich Williams is out for the Thunder, while Beal and Gordon are probable for the Suns, but Booker and Lee remain unavailable.
Jusuf Nurkic has embraced his role with the Phoenix Suns. He may have taken on more responsibility than expected to open the season due to the injuries to Bradley Beal and Devin Booker. In nine games, Nurkic has averaged 10.9 points, 9.3 rebounds, and 5.0 assists per game - second only to Devin Booker, who has played just two games.
Through his nine matches played, Nurkic has collected 10 or more rebounds three times. Since replacing Deandre Ayton, Nurkic has been the Suns’ number-one option in the frontcourt this season. While solid, he could be more efficient in his production. His playmaking has been a bonus, showing how well he has fit into the new-look Suns’ offense.
Nurkic only played the Thunder once last season, and he put up a modest 12.0 points, 6.0 rebounds, and 4.0 assists in 23 minutes played. He now faces an Oklahoma City team that averages just 41.3 rebounds per game (25th in the NBA) while allowing 47.4 to their opponents (26th in the NBA). Nurkic should have a great night on the glass against the Thunder’s slight frontcourt.
Rookie sensation Chet Holmgren has been fantastic through his early-season performance with the Oklahoma City Thunder. While there’s still plenty of room to grow, he’s impressed by averaging 16.2 points, 7.8 rebounds, 2.3 blocks, and 1.7 threes per game on 55.4% from the field and 50.0% from three. Healthy and encouraged to contribute to an energetic Thunder team, Holmgren has been impressive.
Holmgren has hit two or more threes four times in his nine appearances. He failed to hit a three in his last match, a loss to the Kings, but he will see a favorable matchup tonight. While he’ll be at a disadvantage on the defensive end, Holmgren will have plenty of opportunity in this matchup when he’s on the offensive side of the ball.
