The New York Knicks enter this matchup with the disappointment of an underperformance against the New Orleans Pelicans. After a solid start to the season, New York struggled to shoot the ball in their most recent match against the Pelicans. Now sitting at 1-2, the Knicks must regain ground in the Eastern Conference.
In their last game, New York shot 36.7% from the field and a dreadful 18.9% from three-point range. After losing the first quarter 12-26, the Knicks could never rally back in the scoring department.
Through their first three games, the Knicks have struggled on the offensive side of the ball. While they are fourth in threes made per game (15.0) and ninth in three-point efficiency (36.9%), they are shooting just 40.4% from the field (29th in the NBA).
The Knicks were 3-1 against the Cavaliers last season, averaging 108.8 points per game while holding the Cavaliers to 105.3. New York had the edge from three-point range in those meetings, hitting on a 39.2% clip.
With Cavaliers guard Donovan Mitchell questionable to play this game, the Knicks have an excellent opportunity to find victory.
One of the bright spots in the New York Knicks’ early season, RJ Barrett, has come alive off the back of a historic performance at the FIBA World Cup this summer. Barrett has led the Knicks in the scoring category while expanding his game in ways Knicks fans and bettors can be pleased with.
Through three games, Barrett is averaging 22.7 points, 3.3 assists, and 3.0 rebounds per game on 47.1% from the field and 37.5% from three-point range. He is jointly leading the Knicks in usage at 27.0%, along with point guard Jalen Brunson.
Most notably, Barrett has stepped up his three-point shooting efficiency. He’s averaging 2.0 threes per game on 37.5% shooting, a jump from his 31.0% mark from deep last season.
Barrett did struggle against the Cavaliers last season, averaging 15.0 points, 6.0 rebounds, and 1.3 assists on 42.3% shooting from the field and 43.5% from three.
His willingness to shoot the ball against the Cavaliers’ excellent interior defense is promising. In his current form, even with his own game against the Pelicans, Barrett should hit 2+ threes with ease.
All-Star for the New York Knicks last season, Julius Randle has struggled in his opening three games. His scoring efficiency is way off the mark, but he still contributes in other areas to compensate for his struggles.
Through three games, Randle is averaging 13.7 points, 11.7 rebounds, and 6.7 assists on 27.7% shooting from the field and 30.0% from three-point range. He’s been a -5.7 through his first three games, despite his efforts to produce beyond the scoring column.
In three games against the Cavaliers last season, Randle averaged 23.0 points, 10.3 rebounds, and 5.0 assists on 43.4% from the field and 40.9% from three. His versatility on both ends was invaluable to their success, and he relished the opportunity to play against the Cavaliers’ interior defenders.
While he may not be in his best form, Randle’s rebounding rate can be relied upon.
