The Sacramento Kings and the San Antonio Spurs face off in another edition of the In-Season Tournament. The Kings have been recovering from a rough period without De’Aaron Fox, while the Spurs remain one of the weakest teams in the NBA. Both want to take steps toward climbing the standings in this Western Conference matchup.
The Sacramento Kings have struggled to find consistency through the early parts of the season. Still a high-scoring outfit, the Kings have lacked efficiency, averaging 114.6 points per game (10th) while shooting 45.7% from the field (23rd) and 33.9% from three-point range (24th). Only playing in five games this season, Fox is leading the Kings with 30.0 points, 5.8 assists, and 4.0 rebounds on 49.1% from the field and 35.9% from three.
The San Antonio Spurs are right on track, projected to be one of the NBA’s worst teams this season. Despite the defensive efforts of Victor Wembnayama, the Spurs own the league’s worst defense, allowing 124.1 points per game (30th) on 49.9% from the field (30th) and 40.3% from three (29th). As a small consolation, Wembanyama is the frontrunner for Rookie of the Year, averaging 18.6 points, 9.3 rebounds, and 2.4 blocks per game.
The Kings are expected to be without two big men on Friday night, Alex Len and Trey Lyles. Guard Devin Vassell has been ruled out of Friday’s game, while Keldon Johnson, Tre Jones, and Sandro Mamukelashvili are listed as day-to-day for the Spurs.

Malik Monk is one of the NBA’s premiere bench players, being very productive for the Kings despite not having a starter’s designation. In 10 games, Monk has averaged 13.1 points, 5.4 assists, 3.0 rebounds, and 2.0 threes per game on 38.1% from the field and 35.1% from three-point range.
Throughout the Kings’ four-game winning streak, Monk has put up 12.8 points, 6.8 assists, 4.5 rebounds, and 1.5 threes per game on 31.8% from the field and 27.3% from three-point range.
This matchup against the San Antonio Spurs may be precisely what Monk needs after his recent inefficient streak on the field. He averaged two threes per game against the Spurs last season, and their defense is debatably worse. Expect Monk to convert on a good share of opportunities from range.

Domantas Sabonis is one of the NBA's most versatile players. A threat at every level on offense, Sabonis averages 19.1 points, 12.8 rebounds, and 7.3 assists on 60.0% from the field and 36.4% from three-point range.
There's an apparent correlation between Sabonis' play and the success of the Sacramento Kings. In victories for the Kings, Sabonis averages 8.2 assists versus 6.0 per game in losses. Fortunately for Sabonis and the Kings, the Spurs' defense is one of the worst at tracking their man - allowing 28.2 assists per game (29th).
