NBA Play-In Tournament Predictions

In the Eastern Conference, the Orlando Magic and the Atlanta Hawks are favorites to progress to the NBA Playoffs. But don’t rule out the Miami Heat, a young team with postseason experience, whose late-season form shouldn’t detract from their potential in a playoff setting. The seventh seed has continuously advanced to the playoffs, so taking the Magic is a safe bet, on top of their improved form to close the season. However, the outcome between the Hawks, Bulls, and Heat is more unpredictable. If Atlanta can’t get out of the first phase against Orlando, expect a dogfight between them and the Heat to qualify for the eighth seed–as Miami got the better of them to close the regular season.

The Western Conference side of the Play-In Tournament should be one of the most competitive in its history, with contenders like the Warriors and Grizzlies facing off. At the same time, underdogs in the Kings and Mavericks try to overcome the odds. Dallas’ team injuries weren’t enough to stop them from taking down Sacramento, and they have the second round of the Play-In Tournament to claim the eighth seed in the West Playoffs. Expect the Warriors and Grizzlies to make their way to the postseason, as the Kings and Mavericks fall short due to the gap between them and their competitors.

NBA Play-In Tournament Picks

Western Conference Picks - (7) Golden State Warriors, (8) Memphis Grizzlies

Tuesday night featured the seventh and eighth seeds in the West competing for the seventh spot in the West Playoffs. The Golden State Warriors won in a hard-fought game that went down to the wire. In a 116-121 win over the Grizzlies, Golden State earned their spot in the postseason behind 38 points from Jimmy Butler and 37 points from Stephen Curry on the night. Their offense proved as threatening as ever, sending a warning signal to their opponents in the First Round of the West Playoffs.

After Wednesday night’s game, we saw the Dallas Mavericks progress after a win over the Sacramento Kings. They’ll take on the Memphis Grizzlies on Friday night. The Mavericks beat the odds despite a shorthanded roster, shooting 49.4% from the field and hitting 14 threes on 50.0% efficiency in a win-or-go-home game. Dallas impressed, but the depth and quality of the Memphis Grizzlies projects to be too much for the underdog Mavericks to overcome. Expect the Grizzlies to take the eighth seed on Friday night.

Eastern Conference Picks - (7) Orlando Magic, (8) Miami Heat

The Orlando Magic easily booked their ticket to the NBA Playoffs on Tuesday night, defeating the Hawks 95-120. Their defense was locked in, holding their opponents to just 38.1% from the field and 19.0% from three-point range. Their star duo of Banchero and Wagner struggled, shooting 10 of 28 on the night, but a massive 26-point showing from Cole Anthony off the bench helped them dominate the Hawks.

After a strong performance to take down the Chicago Bulls on Wednesday night, the Miami Heat will take on the Atlanta Hawks in a contest for the eighth seed in the East Playoffs. The offensive side was expected to be Miami’s issue, but they put up 109 points on the road in their first Play-In game against a Bulls team that took three games from them in the regular season. The Hawks couldn’t cope with the Magic’s defense, and the Heat projects to give them a similarly tough time on the defensive end, on top of Tyler Herro’s threatening scoring form.

Which Teams Are Playing in the NBA Play-In Tournament?

The Orlando Magic went 7-3 to close the season but couldn’t reclaim a top-six position. They’re trailed by Southeast Division rivals in the Atlanta Hawks and Miami Heat, who have been inconsistent but boast All-NBA level talent. Rounding out the Play-In are the Chicago Bulls, who surprised many as they closed the season on a strong run that saw them become the only East Play-In team with a winning road record.

A loss to close the regular season placed the Golden State Warriors into the NBA Play-In Tournament, and behind them are the Memphis Grizzlies, who occupy eighth after going 4-6 in their final ten games. The Sacramento Kings held on after a tumultuous second half of the season, while the Dallas Mavericks overcame the odds despite losing Kyrie Irving for the season to injury.
