How Can the Nuggets Beat the Celtics?
The Denver Nuggets are looking to extend their winning streak, but face a tough test in the Boston Celtics. Against one of the league’s most in-form offences, Denver’s defensive instincts need to be on point.
Denver aren’t exactly the most intimidating defensive unit. While they are very efficient scoring the ball, they tend to give up opportunities on the other end – to the tune of a 46.6% field goal percentage allowed.
In victories, the Nuggets force their opponents to shoot 44.4% from the field while forcing 13.7 turnovers per game. Keeping up with the Celtics won’t be easy, but it’ll be necessary to take a win from the Celtics.
Nuggets Key Player: (F) Aaron Gordon
The Denver Nuggets thought that Aaron Gordon would be the piece that gets them over the hump in the Western Conference, but as with the entire team inconsistency hampers his success. He is a very capable player though, and a strong night from him does wonders for the Nuggets’ chances at victory.
Gordon is coming off of a game where he posted 19 points, 8 rebounds, and 3 assists on 8 of 12 shooting from the field. His three-point shot was on target that night, converting on 3 of his 5 attempts.
The Denver Nuggets need Gordon to score efficiently to take down the Celtics. But that doesn’t take away the fact that he’ll be asked to contain Boston’s scoring wings. It won’t be an easy night for the Nuggets big man.
How Can the Celtics Beat the Nuggets?
The Boston Celtics want to take advantage of their red-hot offence and surprisingly effective defence. While they’ve had a relatively beneficial schedule through their 6-game win streak, the Nuggets will be one of their toughest tests.
In their last game against the shorthanded Nets, the Celtics were unstoppable from the jump. Boston got off to a 28-2 run to start the game and never looked back. Against a Nuggets team with one of the slowest paces in the league, speed will be to Boston’s advantage.
It was Jaylen Brown who led the Celtics through the first quarter, but the tone he set helped his teammates succeed. If they can define the pace of the game early, the Nuggets could struggle to keep up.
Celtics Key Player: (G) Marcus Smart
The Boston Celtics an be an up-and-down team, but when they have multiple contributors they’re a force to be reckoned with. In their last game, a victory over the Nets, Marcus Smart stepped up to support Boston’s scoring effort.
A streaky shooter, Smart was solid from the field in his last game. He posted 22 points on 8 of 16 shooting from the field, while also converting on 6 of his 13 three-point field goal attempts.
Smart was a team-leading plus-40 in his last game against the Nets. In order for the Celtics to come out with a victory, Smart must maintain his efficiency.
