How Can the Knicks Beat the Heat?

The New York Knicks are outmatched in almost every category against the Miami Heat, but they’ve shown in recent wins that their team play can dismantle defences. If they want to beat Miami, the Knicks need to be aggressive from the tip.

In their last game, a win against the Hornets, New York shot 51.8% from the field and 44.4% from three-point range. They were able to outscore the Knicks 40-24 in the first quarter, and never looked back.

New York will face a much tougher defence in the Heat this time out, so they’ll need to push the pace to avoid their halfcourt pressure. Despite one of the league’s best three-point defences, New York will need to find a way to convert from range to keep pace.

Knicks Key Player: (G-F) RJ Barrett

With each passing day it looks like RJ Barrett will be the one to lead the New York Knicks to an exciting future. In his last game, a win over the Charlotte Hornets, Barrett showed that he’s more than capable of taking on a leadership role.

Barrett is coming off of a performance where he posted 30 points, 3 rebounds, and 3 assists. On top of his solid shooting from deep, 3 of 7, Barrett hit 7 of his 8 free throw attempts.

The Miami Heat are the type of team that can give Barrett a lot of issues. Unless his shooting game is on point, the Heat will smother him on all of his drives. Barrett’s playmaking will be just as crucial as his scoring in this matchup.

How Can the Heat Beat the Knicks?

The Miami Heat are a better team than the New York Knicks. However, through their last two games the Heat have struggled to sort out their defence. They must improve in that area to beat the Knicks.

Over the course of their past two losses, the Heat have allowed their opponents to shoot 50.9% from the field and 41.1% from three-point range. Many of their struggles stem from their inability to rebound the ball, losing the battle on the boards by an average of 11.0 over their last two.

The Knicks own an explosive offence, so Miami must tighten the screws on the defensive end if they hope to win the game. If they can’t control the Knicks early, they’ll have a tough time holding them off.

Heat Key Player: (F) Jimmy Butler

Jimmy Butler has always been a polarizing figure for his teams, but emotions seemed to boil over in his last game. Despite the incident, Butler still performed admirably in light of the loss.

In his last game, a loss to the Golden State Warriors, Butler posted 20 points, 5 rebounds, 3 assists, and 2 steals in 40 minutes of play. While his shooting can be inconsistent, he more than makes up for it with his defensive effort.

Butler will need to be the one to organize the Heat’s defence against New York’s dangerous inside-outside attack. If he can control the Knicks from the point of attack, the Heat can put the Knicks to bed early.
