How can the Knicks beat the Mavericks?
The New York Knicks take on one of the most in-form teams in the NBA in the Dallas Mavericks. Coming off of a game where their offence wasn’t slowed down, the Knicks will need to engage their defence against the Mavs.
In their last 5 games, all wins, the Dallas Mavericks have shot an 48.9% from the field and 37.8% from three-point range – while making 14.2 three-pointers per game.
For the Knicks to win, they must find a way to limit Dallas’ scorers. In the bottom third of the league in three-point field goals allowed (13.0 per game), New York will need to summon some rarely-found defensive form.
Knicks Key Player: (F) Julius Randle
While Julius Randle’s production has been in doubt throughout the season, he was locked-in during his last game against the Kings. Randle had a massive night, something that he can build upon against the Mavericks.
In his last game, a win against the Sacramento Kings, Randle posted 46 points and 10 rebounds on 18 of 31 shooting from the field. He was also encouraging from three-point range, converting on 8 of his 16 attempts from deep.
Randle’s aggression on offence opens up the entire court for the Knicks. If they can rely on him to score against the Mavericks, who aren’t the best paint protecting team, New York have a good chance.
How can the Mavericks beat the Knicks?
When their offence is engaged, the New York Knicks can be as intimidating as any team in the NBA. Running their offence through just a few key players, the Mavericks must be wary of New York’s big guns.
In New York’s last game, a win over the Kings, the trio of Barrett, Randle, and Quickley were massive. The three players combined for 102 of the team’s 131 points, all shooting well over 50% from the field.
Dallas have improved their defence this season, but they don’t have any singular defenders able to stop the one-on-one play of the Knicks’ stars. Rotating with multiple defenders, while also not giving up opportunities on the pass-out, will be crucial to stopping the Knicks.
Mavericks Key Player: (G) Luka Doncic
Through the Dallas Mavericks’ five game winning streak, Doncic has been masterful. He only played four out of the last five, but his impact has been the difference maker.
In his last four games, Doncic posted an average of 33.8 points, 11.3 rebounds, and 5.8 assists on 50.5% shooting from the field. While his assist numbers aren’t as high as usual, he’s thriving with a second ball handler on the court.
With some additional support, Doncic has been able to pursue his offence even more liberally. While 50% shooting from the field isn’t entirely sustainable, maintaining his shooting efficiency will be key to Dallas’ success.
