The Los Angeles Lakers can take pride in their efforts against some of the Western Conference’s top teams, despite some results. Now 1-2 to open the season, the Lakers aim to bring their record to .500 with a win over the Orlando Magic.
In their last match, the Lakers lost 127-132 to the Sacramento Kings. After giving up a 41-point first quarter, the Lakers fought back to force overtime. Only to ultimately be defeated in the extra frames.
After a poor opening game, Anthony Davis has returned to form in recent games. Against the Kings, he led the Lakers with 30 points, 16 rebounds, and 3 blocks on 50.0% shooting from the field. He currently leads the Lakers with 25.7 points per game.
Through three games, the Lakers are averaging 111.3 points per game on 44.1% from the field and 29.1% from three-point range. They’ve averaged 46.3 rebounds per game, 12th in the NBA, something they’ll have to improve on against the Magic, who are third in the league with 51.0 rebounds per contest.
The Los Angeles Lakers were 2-0 against the Orlando Magic last season, winning by an average margin of 12.5 points. The Lakers have won their last six contests against Orlando, dating back to the 2020-21 season.
At 38 years old, LeBron James defies the odds, as he’s averaged 23.0 points, 10.3 rebounds, and 7.3 assists per game.
The Lakers have all the talent to overcome the young Magic, but they’ll still need their role players to achieve good form if they hope to make a run in the Western Conference.
Franz Wagner is rising to become one of the NBA’s top young talents. Now in his third season and coming off of FIBA World Cup gold with Germany, the Magic small forward is carrying his momentum into the NBA season.
Through two games, Wagner has averaged 21.0 points, 4.5 rebounds, and 2.5 assists per game on 39.3% from the field and 37.5% from three-point range. Leading Orlando in USG% at 28.4%, Wagner has taken on the number-one option for the Magic in this early season.
A big boost to Wagner’s game and his production has come through his ability to get to the free throw line. Averaging 7.5 free throws per game to start the season, with 7.0 made per game, Wagner has diversified his scoring range despite early drops in efficiency.
In two games against the Lakers last season, Wagner averaged 18.0 points, 5.5 assists, and 5.0 rebounds on 45.2% from the field but just 16.7% from three-point range.
Wagner will be leaned on as the Lakers employ a stout interior defense that matches up well against Paolo Banchero and Wendell Carter Jr. The Lakers’ defense hasn’t been entirely convincing through three games, though, so Wagner should find success despite the Magic’s early methodical pace.
Last year’s NBA Rookie of the Year, Paolo Banchero, has started slowly to open the 2023-24 NBA season. While his efficiency isn’t an issue, he’s not integrated himself into the offense as aggressively as in his rookie campaign.
Through two games, Banchero has averaged 13.0 points, 6.0 rebounds, and 4.5 assists on 44.4% from the field. He’s posted a positive plus-minus through two games, but his failure to establish his offensive role against two lower-tier teams, the Rockets and Trail Blazers, is a cause for concern.
In two games against the Lakers last season, Banchero averaged 12.5 points, 5.5 rebounds, and 3.0 assists on 34.6% from the field and 16.7% from three. Still adjusting to the Magic offense, Banchero’s usage has dropped from a team-leading 27.5% last season to 20.0% through two games.
A Same Game Parlay in NBA betting combines multiple wagers on one game, including point spreads, totals, and player props. If all selections within the same game are correct, the bet wins, offering higher potential payouts but with greater risk.
