How Can the Heat Beat the Sixers?

The Miami Heat have done an excellent job on both ends of the floor. While the Heat’s offense has had a little issue, especially through Game 2, their defensive standards need to be maintained when they’re on the road.

In Game 2, Miami were able to hold off the Sixers’ three-point game plan. Out of Philadelphia’s 30 three-point field goal attempts, they were only able to convert on 8 of them. Miami were willing to let the Sixers attack the paint, in exchange for locking down the perimeter.

If Miami can continue to control the Sixers from the perimeter, they don’t have the interior presence to trouble the Heat. Miami can continue comfortably so long as their perimeter defense stays disciplined.

Heat Key Player: (C) Bam Adebayo

Miami Heat center Bam Adebayo has been performing very well without Joel Embiid opposing him in the paint. Neither DeAndre Jordan nor Paul Reed have been able to challenge Adebayo defensively.

Through two games against the Sixers, Adebayo has averaged 23.5 points, 10.5 rebounds, and 3.5 assists, in 33.3 minutes per game. He’s shooting a very efficient 71.4% from the field, although he is committing 2.0 turnovers per game.

If Adebayo continues to go unchallenged in the paint, the Heat will find another victory for themselves in this series. Adebayo’s offensive contributions are really just a secondary benefit to his constant defensive presence.

How Can the Sixers Beat the Heat?

The Philadelphia 76ers need to find the positives from their past two losses and build on them. They’ve looked uncompetitive without Embiid in the lineup, thus their two-way play needs to be in top form.

In their Game 2 loss to the Miami Heat, the Sixers tried to pressure the ball to find extra opportunities. They forced the Heat to commit 14 turnovers to just 8 of their own, but their exuberance led to being beaten with passing. The Heat eventually shot 51.3% from the field and 48.3% from three.

If the Sixers can add a new wrinkle to their game like getting on the glass, where they were outrebounded by 10 in Game 2, they can bring new life to this series. As they are, there’s little to suggest the Sixers can claw back into this series.

Sixers Key Player: (G) Tyrese Maxey

The Philadelphia 76ers are down in a 0-2 hole, but one of their sole bright spots through the performance has been Tyrese Maxey. The second-year guard has taken a massive step forward in his role, and has flourished while doing so.

In his Game 2 performance against the Miami Heat, Maxey was unstoppable on the offensive end. He posted 34 points, 3 rebounds, and 2 steals in 43 minutes of play. He shot 54.5% from the field and made 9 of his 11 free throw attempts.

Maxey needs to keep up his scoring if he hopes to help the Sixers to their first victory of the series. Home court will help, but he needs to help create opportunities for shooters, while also helping to push the pace.
