The Los Angeles Lakers succeeded in their first 2024 Emirates NBA Cup game. While it’s an uphill battle to win Group B, the Lakers got a strong start with a win over the San Antonio Spurs. They have several injuries to manage after four weeks of the regular season, but if they can get into the knockout rounds, it’s difficult to bet against a LeBron James-led Los Angeles Lakers team.

Coach: Tom Thibodeau
Key Players: Jalen Brunson, Karl-Anthony Towns, Mikal Bridges
Form: NYK def. BKN (124-122)
After a 2023-24 season that inspired optimism in the Knicks’ future, the New York front office made a big offseason splash to make them trophy contenders. It hasn’t paid off yet through the early season, as they’ve exchanged their defensive grit for a high-octane offense. The Knicks certainly don’t lack talent, but they haven’t sorted out their new team balance, and finishing in the top two in Group A, which features the Sixers and Magic, will be a difficult task.
The Knicks have already played two Group Phase matches, most recently defeating the Brooklyn Nets 122-124. They staved off a 40-point fourth quarter from their rivals across the river, led by Jalen Brunson, who posted 37 points, seven assists, and three made threes in 34 minutes of play. If the Knicks earn another win, they can guarantee a spot in the knockout rounds.
The Knicks will play Game 3 of their Emirates NBA Cup Group Phase against the Charlotte Hornets on Friday, November 29.

Coach: Kenny Atkinson
Key Players: Donovan Mitchell, Darius Garland, Evan Mobley
Form: CLE def. CHI (144-126)
Before the NBA season began, few believed the Cavaliers would be competing for any meaningful prize. However, three weeks into the season, the Cavaliers are undefeated under the guidance of new head coach Kenny Atkinson. A group of young talent and experienced players, the Cavaliers boast the league’s best offense and a defense that can compete with anyone. Occupying Group C with the Boston Celtics, a top-two finish to enter the knockout phase looks like a given for the red-hot Cavaliers.
The Cavaliers maintained their exciting playstyle in their first 2024 Emirates NBA Cup Group Phase match. Facing the Chicago Bulls, the Cleveland Cavaliers found victory by scoring an incredible 144 points. Donovan Mitchell led the way with 37 points, but Darius Garland, Jarrett Allen, and Caris LeVert contributed over 20 points each night.
The Cavaliers will play Game 2 of their Emirates NBA Cup Group Phase against the Boston Celtics on Tuesday, November 19.

Coach: Steve Kerr
Key Players: Stephen Curry, Draymond Green, Buddy Hield
Form: GSW def. MEM (118-123)
Expectations for the Golden State Warriors weren’t high to enter the regular season, but a swift start has them ascending the odds tables for both the Emirates NBA Cup and the NBA Championship. Behind the leadership and experience of Stephen Curry and Draymond Green and a revitalized second unit led by Buddy Hield, it seems the sun hasn’t yet set on the Warriors dynasty. Young players like Jonathan Kuminga and Brandin Podziemski must step up if the Warriors hope to compete, and the Emirates NBA Cup is where their standards will be tested.
The Warriors played their second game of the 2024 NBA Emirates Cup Group Phase against the Memphis Grizzlies, winning 118-123. No single player stood out on offense, including Stephen Curry, and the team compensated by producing six different double-digit scorers, with three coming from off the bench. Leading the way in the scoring column was Buddy Hield, who put up 18 points, four rebounds, and four made threes in 30 minutes off the bench.
The Warriors will play Game 3 of their Emirates NBA Cup Group Phase against the New Orleans Pelicans on Friday, November 22.

Coach: Mark Daigneault
Key Players: Shai Gilgeous-Alexander, Jalen Williams, Chet Holmgren
Form: OKC def. PHO (99-83)
The Oklahoma City Thunder have been one of the strongest teams in the NBA this season. Despite suffering injuries to some key players through the early-season schedule, that hasn’t deterred them from claiming first place in the West. In a tough Group B, the Thunder have taken an early lead as they try to reach the knockout rounds.
In their first game of the Emirates NBA Cup Group Phase, the Thunder held the usually potent Phoenix Suns to just 83 points on 29.3% shooting on the night. To nobody’s surprise, Shai Gilgeous-Alexander led the way with 28 points, six rebounds, four assists, and two made threes. They didn’t shoot the ball well by their standards, but they could stave off their opponents with their defensive quality.
The Oklahoma City Thunder will play Game 2 of their Emirates NBA Cup Group Phase against the San Antonio Spurs on Tuesday, November 19.
