Odds have been released for which team will select presumptive first-overall NBA Draft pick and Duke superstar freshman Cooper Flagg.

The 6-foot-9 18-year-old is in high demand after his only season in college, during which he won ACC Player of the Year and National College Player of the Year and was a consensus first-team All-American.

As the NBA regular season comes to a close and many have their eyes fixed on NBA championship odds, there’s an intriguing race going on at the bottom of the standings to see which team will finish with the best odds to land the first pick in the draft and likely make Flagg the new face of their franchise.

Who Is Cooper Flagg?

Cooper Flagg is a 6-foot-9, 205-pound forward from Newport, Maine. He was the top recruit in the 2024 high school class and spent last summer playing with the Team USA select team to help prepare LeBron James, Steph Curry, Kevin Durant, and the NBA’s top stars for the Paris Olympics.

In his lone season at Duke, Flagg averaged 19.2 points, 7.5 rebounds, 4.2 assists, 1.4 blocks, and 1.4 steals per game while shooting 48.1 percent from the field, 38.5 percent from three, and 84 percent from the free-throw line.

He was even better during March Madness, during which he led the Blue Devils to the Final Four before losing to Houston. He averaged 21 points, 7.6 rebounds, 5.0 assists, and 2.0 blocks on 44/50/90 shooting splits across five tournament games.

Despite being the age of a high school senior, Flagg has already been earmarked as the next best American-born basketball player and a potential face of the league now that many of the dominant stars are in the final years of their careers.

Flagg’s skill set transcends the role of a traditional power forward. He excels in every area of the game and can be used as both a scorer and a high-post hub in the way that players such as LeBron and Paolo Banchero often are.

Five straight players taken with the first pick in the NBA Draft, excluding the first pick in the 2024 Draft, Zaccharie Risacher, have already been named All-Stars. The expectations are high for Flagg, but he seems primed to deliver.

Cooper Flagg: NBA Player Profile

As if Flagg’s superstar performances weren’t enough, he demonstrated noticeable improvement during his time at Duke. He heads to the NBA with a wide array of tools in his kit and will be able to impact his future team in a variety of ways on both ends.

Strengths

  • Relentless motor

  • Channels his passion into intelligent aggression

  • Knows how to get to his spots without the ball

  • Willing defender at all levels

  • Disruptive in the passing lanes

  • Excellent help-side defender and rim deterrent

  • Efficient shooter at every level

  • Size and vision make him an excellent pick-and-roll creator

  • Selfless enough to wait his turn, dominant enough to score in a hurry

  • Terrific athlete

  • Malleable to offensive schemes and plays

  • Truly positionless player

Weaknesses

  • Needs to add weight in the NBA

  • Jump shot fluidity needs improvement, particularly from three

  • Handle is average for his size, needs to improve to become a primary ball-handler

  • Willingness to contest shots leads to him being caught out of position

  • “Tweener” status creates questions about his best defensive matchup

Cooper Flagg Best NBA Fit

Washington Wizards (+650) at bet365

Flagg would be able to pair up with the second-overall draft pick in the last draft, Alex Sarr, giving the Wizards a frontcourt with tons of size, defense, and rebounding. They have culture-setting veterans in Khris Middleton and Marcus Smart, a legit 20-point-plus-per-game scorer in Jordan Poole, and young guards in Bub Carrington and Bilal Coulibaly who have flashed throughout the season.

Washington also quietly showed real progression over the last couple of months.

Cooper Flagg Worst NBA Fit

New Orleans Pelicans (+500) at bet365

The Pelicans already squandered a plethora of chances to build around talented players and prospects, whether that be Anthony Davis, DeMarcus Cousins, Lonzo Ball, Brandon Ingram, Josh Hart, Julius Randle, Jrue Holiday, Dejounte Murray, CJ McCollum, or Zion Williamson. The organization doesn’t have a lick of a winning culture, and he wouldn’t fit in a starting lineup with Williamson.

He also deserves to be the centerpiece of a franchise’s transition to the future, and he wouldn’t be that in New Orleans.
