While you may look at a team fielding Kawhi Leonard, Paul George, and Serge Ibaka as a fearsome defensive unit, you’d be overlooking their ability on the offensive side of the ball.
With shooting across their line and threats to attract double-teams in George and Leonard, the Clippers are taking advantage of their open looks. Fifth overall in three-pointers made and first overall in three-point shooting percentage, the Clippers’ range has pushed them to the top of the West.
Nine different players on the Clippers average at least one three-point field goal per game. That isn’t to say that they should become volume shooters though. Establishing themselves inside, in order to create better opportunities for themselves will open up their offense.
The Nets have one of the most polarizing teams in the league, which is fitting for their polarizing style of play. Filled with scoring talent but little defensive focus, the Nets are setting records with their style.
Since the arrival of James Harden, the Nets have a 122.6 offensive rating and a 119.9 defensive rating. That would rank them as the best offence of all-time, as well as the worst defence of all-time.
It’s clear that rookie head coach Steve Nash doesn’t want to stifle his team’s creativity. But they’re losing games by letting teams score on them on the other end. Are they likely to change their style? Probably not. But they’ll need to put in more of an effort to stop the versatile Clippers.
You probably don’t think of Luke Kennard when you think of the LA Clippers. However, the 24-year-old swingman came into the Clippers team with strong skillset but he hasn’t quite met his potential.
Head coach Tyronn Lue has made it clear that he wants Kennard to be more selfish, especially when shooting from three. A 47.2% shooter from deep, Kennard’s 8.5 points per game is a far cry from his 15.8 point per game mark last season.
With Lou Williams taking a notable step back in production, Kennard’s shooting can make up for the perennial Sixth Man of the Year award winners lack of production.
The 31-year-old former MVP looks rejuvenated after making his move from longtime home Houston. As part of a new big three in Brooklyn, Harden has taken no time to settle in.
After averaging 25.3 points, 11.3 assists, and 7.3 rebounds while helping his Nets to a 3-1 record last week, Harden was named the Eastern Conference Player of the Week on Monday.
Harden will have to show his scoring chops once again against one of the leagues fiercest defenders in Kawhi Leonard. In order to take down the Clippers, Harden will have to play distributor as much as he does scorer.
