How Can the Clippers Beat the Lakers?
The LA Clippers came out on the winning end of a tough game against the Lakers last time they met. To beat the Lakers in this meeting, the Clippers must replicate their shooting efficiency from last time out.
LA aren’t the most talented three-point shooting team in the league, but they’re efficient because they play inside-out. Shooting 51.7% from the field in their last game against the Lakers is what opened up the court for their 43.3% shooting.
The Lakers will likely be missing their key big man Anthony Davis, but that doesn’t mean it’ll be an easy night for the Clippers. If they can find efficient opportunities early, it’ll only help them as the game opens up.
Clippers Key Player: (G) Reggie Jackson
With so many Clippers rotation players in and out of the lineup, it has been Reggie Jackson who has held the team together through this season. Against the Lakers, Jackson will need to be on his game.
While not his best scoring season, Jackson has been excellent. He is averaging 16.6 points, 4.5 assists, and 3.4 rebounds on 30.9 minutes per game. His ability to get to the free throw line, 8.9 attempts per game, has been key for their success.
Against the Lakers, Jackson needs to lead with efficiency. He is shooting just 39.5% from the field and 32.5% from deep. He must be accurate with his opportunities due to their lack of personnel.
How Can the Lakers Beat the Clippers?
The Los Angeles Lakers need to get back on track and find their way into the NBA Playoffs. To beat the Clippers, they need to dominate the paint.
Despite Anthony Davis being out, the Lakers still have contributors on the glass from every position. On average, the Lakers lose the rebounding battle regardless of result.
The Lakers don’t put in much work on the offensive glass, which contributes to their 17th ranked rebounding rate at 44.8 per game. The Clippers are a gritty team who will look to convert inside to open up their shooting. The Lakers must control the glass to win.
Lakers Key Player: (G) Russell Westbrook
The Los Angeles Lakers front office ultimately decided to retain Russell Westbrook after the trade deadline. He’ll need to be back on form for the Lakers to make a serious playoff push.
Through the first phase of the season, Westbrook posted 18.3 points, 7.8 rebounds, and 7.5 assists. He’s been incredibly inconsistent this season, especially his three-point shooting at 29.9%.
Westbrook must be aggressive going to the rim for the Lakers to find success. If he can’t push the pace and attract defenders, Westbrook’s game can throttle the Lakers offence.
