New York Knicks star Jalen Brunson has helped his squad get off to a solid start to the season despite an opening-night blowout. With a more balanced roster, Brunson has been relieved of his absurd offensive burden, which has allowed him to be more measured and efficient on the offensive side of the ball.
Through two games this season, Jalen Brunson is averaging 24.0 points, 3.5 assists, and 2.0 threes per game on 57.6% from the field and 57.1% from three-point range. In three meetings against the Cavaliers last season, Brunson averaged 14.3 points, 3.0 rebounds, 2.0 assists, and 0.3 threes. His numbers from last season are underwhelming but skewed due to a 47-second appearance in March.
Brunson’s recent shooting history against the Cavaliers isn’t promising, but the improved Knicks lineup bodes well for Brunson going into Monday night. Expect Brunson to be locked in with the opportunity to make a statement against an Eastern Conference rival. His team bounced back after their opening-night embarrassment to the Celtics, so expect them to carry over their recent success to this matchup.

The Cleveland Cavaliers have been excellent to open their season, and much of their success is due to the leadership of Donovan Mitchell. The eight-year veteran has led his team to an undefeated record through Week 1 of the NBA regular season, but the Knicks present their biggest challenge so far. A New York veteran with a history of solid performances at Madison Square Garden, expect a big night from Mitchell.
In three games for the Cavaliers this season, Donovan Mitchell is averaging 23.3 points, 4.3 assists, and 3.0 threes per game on 49.1% from the field and 37.5% from three-point range. In his last game, a win over the Wizards, Mitchell posted 30 points, five assists, four steals, and six threes on 61.1% shooting and 54.5% from deep. The Knicks are a much better defensive team than any of Mitchell’s last three opponents, so he’ll be relied upon offensively on Monday night.
Mitchell only played two games against the Knicks last season, but he was excellent. He averaged 28.0 points, 4.5 rebounds, and 3.0 threes per game on 47.6% shooting and 33.3% from beyond the arc. While the Knicks’ wing defenders are stronger than ever, Mitchell’s recent form and history against New York is promising for his scoring totals Monday night.

Knicks fans have high expectations of All-Star big man Karl-Anthony Towns. While his quality is undoubted, Towns was the central piece to a trade that saw two key Knicks depart from one of their most successful squads in recent memory. He’s been solid through his first two games, but the Cavaliers present an opportunity to prove Towns is the difference maker for New York in their battle for Eastern Conference dominance.
Through his first two games with the New York Knicks, Karl-Anthony Towns is averaging 16.5 points, 11.0 rebounds, and 1.5 threes per game on 50.0% from the field and 75.0% from three-point range. The sample size is small, but Towns perfectly fits into the Knicks offense. Most importantly, he returned from an underwhelming opening night performance in New York’s blowout win over the Indiana Pacers.
Towns will be the focus of fans and critics throughout the Knicks’ season. Towns didn’t play against the Cavaliers last season, but he hit under 10.5 rebounds in 48 of his 62 games last year. Against a Cavaliers frontcourt that boasts two of the league’s best interior defenders, Towns will have the odds stacked against him on Monday night.

Mikal Bridges’ move across town from Brooklyn to Manhattan was one of the most surprising transactions of the summer. Taking a step back from his role as the primary offensive option with the Nets, Bridges is now a super role player amongst his Knicks teammates. Impressive and efficient through two games, expect Bridges to remain productive on Monday night.
While he’s known for his three-and-D prowess, Bridges’ experience as a primary offensive option has built him into a serviceable playmaker and passer. Through two games, he’s averaged 18.5 points, 3.5 assists, and 2.0 threes per game on 60.0% from the field and 40.0% from three-point range. In his last game, a 25-point win over the Pacers, Bridges put up 21 points and five assists on 66.7% from the field and three.
The Knicks will need Bridges' shooting efficiency when they face the Cavaliers’ intimidating interior defense on Monday night. He cleared 2.5 assists in 60 of his 82 games last season with the Brooklyn Nets and three times against the Cavaliers. Even as the secondary or tertiary option on offense, Bridges remains involved and productive in the Knicks offense.
