The NBA's Monday night schedule may be limited, but it features exciting matchups with mostly Eastern Conference teams.
The night begins with a matchup between the bottom two teams in the Eastern Conference, the Detroit Pistons and the Charlotte Hornets. On the other end of the standings, the Miami Heat hope to climb back into playoff position when they face the Philadelphia 76ers. And closing the night will be an up-tempo matchup between the upstart Orlando Magic and the ambitious New Orleans Pelicans!

The Detroit Pistons and the Charlotte Hornets may be at the bottom of the Eastern Conference, but they're sure to put on one of the night's most fast-paced affairs! The Detroit Pistons are currently last in the East, owning a 15-46 overall record and a 7-24 road record. The Charlotte Hornets are 14th in the East with a 19-43 overall record and a 10-18 home record.
The Charlotte Hornets love to push the pace, averaging 92.1 field goal attempts per game (4th in the NBA) while also forcing 15.1 turnovers (9th in the NBA) and collecting 8.1 steals per game (6th in the NBA). The Hornets are on a surprisingly positive run of form as of late, winning their last four games by an average of 123.3 points per game on 49.2% shooting from the field and 41.2% from three. The Detroit Pistons are a much less refined team, opting to attack the basket, which has resulted in their 20.7 made free throws per game (2nd in the NBA) and 21.6 fouls drawn rate (2nd in the NBA). Despite being on a four-game losing streak, the Pistons have fought hard through that stretch and have lost by just a 6.3-point differential while holding teams to just 45.0% shooting from the field.
We're taking the Charlotte Hornets in this matchup against the Detroit Pistons. Not only are the Hornets in much better form, but they're easily the better defensive team of the two. Given their pace and the Pistons' lukewarm defensive intensity, expect Charlotte to find a win.

While the Philadelphia 76ers continue their fight for the top spot in the Eastern Conference, the Miami Heat have fallen into the Play-In Tournament position. The Sixers are currently third in the Eastern Conference with a 39-20 overall record and an impressive 24-9 home record. The Heat are now seventh in the East with a 32-29 overall record and a 13-19 road record.
The Miami Heat boast one of the league's most aggressive defences, allowing just 108.6 points per game (2nd in the NBA) while forcing 16.2 turnovers per game (3rd in the NBA), but they also struggle to score as they allow just 108.1 points per game (30th in the NBA). Unfortunately, the Heat have lost their last four games, with their vaunted defence allowing 116.0 points per game on 50.1% shooting from the field and 39.6% from three-point range. The Sixers will challenge with their own tough defence, which allows just 110.4 points per game (3rd in the NBA) on 47.1% shooting from the field (13th in the NBA) and 34.4% from three-point range (3rd in the NBA). Philadelphia will look to improve after their recent loss to the Boston Celtics, where they allowed their opponents to shoot 50.0% from the field and 43.2% from three-point range on 16 made threes.
Take the Philadelphia 76ers to take down the Miami Heat in this matchup. While they split last year's season series, the Heat are in such a rut that it's difficult to see the Sixers falling short with the strength of their defence and the diversity of their offensive weapons. We're expecting a low-scoring but fairly comfortable victory for the Philadelphia 76ers.

Both the Orlando Magic and the New Orleans Pelicans are looking to improve their positions in their respective conferences. The Orlando Magic are currently 13th in the Eastern Conference with a 25-36 overall record and a 10-20 road record. The New Orleans Pelicans have fallen to 10th in the Western Conference, owning a 30-31 overall record and a 20-10 home record.
The Orlando Magic continue to be an inexperienced but disruptive team, scoring just 110.8 points per game (28th in the NBA) while limiting teams to just 34.9% from three-point range (7th in the NBA) and just 28.4 two-point field goals per game (8th in the NBA). Orlando has gone 5-5 over their last 10 games, mostly due to their offensive struggles, where they've shot just 45.2% from the field and 32.2% from three-point range. The New Orleans Pelicans will counter with their pesky defense, which forces 15.1 turnovers per game (7th in the NBA) and holds teams to just 34.0% from three-point range (1st in the NBA). The Pelicans are on a three-game losing streak through their Eastern Conference road trip, having allowed 121.0 points per game while allowing teams to shoot 50.2% from the field.
The Orlando Magic aren't the most versatile team in the NBA, but their size presents a unique issue for the New Orleans Pelicans. The struggling Pelicans will have to contend with Orlando's athleticism at every position, as their length will disrupt their already pedestrian three-point shooting form. With home-court advantage, we're looking at the Orlando Magic to earn the upset over the New Orleans Pelicans.
