  • Shane van Gisbergen is the heavy favorite at Watkins Glen-obviously.

  • Defending winner Sam Mayer isn’t getting much respect in his return.

  • We know Joey Logano is good at the Glen, but how good is his car?

NASCAR Mission Xfinity 200 Predictions Joey Logano

Mission 200 Predictions

Understandably, Shane van Gisbergen Is Heavily Favored at the Glen

Installing Shane van Gisbergen as the odds-on favorite to win Saturday’s Mission 200 at Watkins Glen International is a no-brainer.

After stumbling at Circuit of the Americas in the first NASCAR Xfinity Road Course race of the season, the three-time Australian Supercars champion has won three straight events on circuits with right turns as well as lefts.

The New Zealander triumphed at Portland, Sonoma and the Chicago Street Course, at the latter two venues from the pole position.

It’s hard to pick against van Gisbergen, but the stopper for us is the puny +135 price via BetMGM. In a race with 37 other cars, there’s too much that can happen to justify a bet that’s close to even odds.

Hence, we’ll avoid van Gisbergen this week, despite his recent record and obvious talent.

Defending Race Winner Sam Mayer Is Getting Very Little Respect

Before Shane van Gisbergen arrived on the scene as a full-time NASCAR Xfinity Series driver, Sam Mayer had established himself as a real threat on road courses.

The driver of the No. 1 JR Motorsports Chevrolet won the first Xfinity race of his career last season at Road America. He followed that with a win at Watkins Glen and a victory from the pole at the Charlotte Roval.

Both of Mayer’s wins this year have come on ovals, but he did win the pole at Portland, and he finished third at Sonoma.

So we don’t think he should be dismissed as readily as his +1600 price via BetMGM might suggest. Mayer is our second choice at Watkins Glen.

Joey Logano Is So Undervalued That We Have to Take a Shot This Week

Ever since Joey Logano raced at Watkins Glen for the first time, there has been a serendipitous relationship between the Team Penske driver and the road course in the Finger Lakes district of New York.

In his first Xfinity start at the track, he ran seventh. That was in 2008, when Logano was 18 years old.

More recently, Logano won four straight poles at the high-speed road course and converted three of those poles into victories, the last coming in 2018 (Logano’s last Xfinity race there).

The driver of the No. 22 Ford also has a NASCAR Cup Series win at the Glen, and we can’t believe he’s offered at +4000 via BetMGM.

Questions about his equipment linger. After AM Racing and Hailie Deegan parted ways, Logano has been a fill-in in select races for the team.

But we’re counting on the technical partnership with Stewart-Haas Racing to put a quality ride under Logano this weekend. Though we admit it’s a major long shot, the +4000 price for a proven winner is just too tempting to resist.
