Old or New Atlanta - AJ Allmendinger Has Found Success on Both

Road course ace AJ Allmendinger got his first NASCAR oval-track victory at Atlanta Motor Speedway in 2020, but that version of Atlanta no longer exists.

In 2021, Atlanta was repaved and reconfigured from 24 degrees of banking in the corners to 28 degrees. That gave NASCAR the ability to use a superspeedway competition package at the 1.54-mile track.

In three starts since the reconfiguration, Allmendinger has finished third, 10th and 13th. In 2022, he broke through for a victory at Talladega Superspeedway.

Given his prowess on drafting tracks and his history at Atlanta, we like the Dinger to finish in the top three at (+325) via betMGM.

We also like Parker Retzlaff to finish in the top five at a generous +850 (betMGM). In the first two races of the season, Retzlaff was third at Daytona and fifth at Atlanta, and two weeks ago at Daytona, he pushed Harrison Burton to victory and finished seventh in the NASCAR Cup race.

Justin Allgaier Will Try to Reverse His Fortunes at Repaved Atlanta

At sister superspeedways Daytona and Talladega, we wouldn’t hesitate to back feisty veteran Justin Allgaier.

Atlanta Motor Speedway is another matter. In 12 starts at the 1.54-mile track before the 2021 repave, Allgaier scored a win and seven other top 10s.

The new version of the speedway, however, has been Kryptonite to the veteran Xfinity Series driver from Riverton, Illinois.

In five starts from 2022 on, Allgaier has posted one seventh-place finish, but his other four results are 34th, 29th, 17th and 28th.

Even though Allgaier is offered at (+1100) via betMGM, we’ll steer clear of the JR Motorsports driver this week because of his recent Atlanta record.

How Can You Bet Against Austin Hill at His “Home” Superspeedway

No driver is happier to see the NASCAR Xfinity Series return to Atlanta Motor Speedway than Austin Hill.

The Richard Childress Racing driver from Winston, Georgia, won the first two races of the 2024 season - at Daytona and Atlanta - but hasn’t won since.

Superspeedways are Hill’s bread and butter. Six of his eight Xfinity Series victories have come on the so-called “drafting tracks.”

Since the reconfiguration of the racing surface at Atlanta, Hill has won three of the five Xfinity races held there, and on Saturday, we believe he’ll win for a fourth time on his home track.

We’re not crazy about the (+300) price at betMGM, but Hill’s prowess forces us to pick him this week.
