Charlotte FC continues to stay north of the border as they will take on a rejuvenated Toronto FC club on Saturday afternoon at BMO Field. Between these sides, the last encounter saw the Crowns running roughshod over TFC back in October, but overall, in the head-to-head department, the Reds hold the advantage with a 2-1-1 record.
Toronto FC looks like a new club under newly appointed manager and ex-Canadian men’s national soccer team coach John Herdman. In 2023 TFC went winless and only picked up four draws away from home. So far in two games Herdman’s men have found a way to collect four points out of a possible six. With their home opener on the horizon, there will be a little more incentive for the lads to set the tone looking to become a threat in the Eastern Conference.
Charlotte FC's previous match was a tale of two halves against the Vancouver Whitecaps in a 1-1 draw. The Crowns were always going to be in a tough spot making the five-hour journey across the continent, but in the first half, it was evident it didn’t affect the squad. Through 45 minutes the Crowns played on the front foot giving Vancouver no opportunity to generate any attacking threat. A late equalizer stoppage time goal was the only blemish Charlotte had in the first half. The second half saw Vancouver turn up the dial which forced Charlotte to soak up and absorb the pressure leaving them content to grab a valuable point on the road.
Here, we will break down the betting odds and share our favorite picks for Toronto vs. Charlotte.
Toronto FC are listed as home favorites at +110 on the money line, the draw is +250 and +230 for Charlotte to pull off the upset. Despite a poor 2023 campaign, TFC did manage to get results at home only losing seven times in 17 home matches.

John Herdman is already earning rave reviews for the performances the club has put in to open the campaign. Herdman can’t turn water into wine, but he certainly knows how to get the best out of his players and to buy into team unity, something that was evidently missing last year. Early to say, but with the hiring of Herdman, TFC might have made the best signing in MLS in 2024 on the pitch or touchline.
Toronto FC's lone goal scorer after two matches, Lorenzo Insigne was able to find the back of the net for the first time since August 2023. All Insigne needed was a moment of brilliance and that is something Charlotte will have to look out for. With a shot accuracy of 75 percent hitting the target, Insigne will be a load to deal with on Saturday.
Grabbing two clean sheets in a row to start the season, Sean Johnson is on fire to kick off 2024. After a disastrous 2023 for TFC conceding the second most goals in MLS with 59, Johnson will be counted on in the significant moments throughout the campaign if he can remain healthy.
luri Tavares, the youth academy product displayed yet again another dazzling performance. The 22-year-old entrance into MLS after two matches is nothing short of impressive. It was only a matter of time before the Cape Verde international would register his first career MLS goal, only taking him 31 minutes into his second professional match. With his blazing pace and technical abilities, it would not be a shock if he finds the back of the net at BMO Field.
On the backend, the trustworthy defender, Adilson Malanda will be the key player to hold off Toronto, especially in the aerial battles. Last match the 22-year-old finished with five-headed clearances. Always in the so-called dirty areas or the pitch, Malanda also completed the most duels in the match with six.

Charlotte is in the middle of their three-game road trip. A club that finished with the 19th-best away record last year, to grab a result again on the road racking up the air miles is a tall task. Moments of fatigue were noticeable and on full display in the second half against Vancouver. Think we see the same theme on repeat in Toronto.
Toronto FC has transformed over night into a contending playoff club from what we have witnessed so far. This encounter will be taking place in late Canadian winter elements, something they’re used to, having the wavering support behind their backs it’s hard not to back Toronto in this situational spot.
