Seattle Sounders FC last faced Portland Timbers in a pre-season friendly ahead of this season. That match didn’t exactly set the world alight, and ended in a goalless draw. A similar result is not too wild an expectation when the two sides clash at the Lumen Field this weekend.
In the last five league meetings, both sides have won twice each, with the other being a 1-1 draw in 2020. Andres Flores had given Timbers the lead early in the match, but Will Bruin scored in the 93rd minute to level things up and share the points.
Take a look at our guide on how to bet on soccer, here!
The last time the Seattle Sounders won in this fixture was back in the middle of the previous season. They took a 2-0 lead inside the first 30 minutes via a brace from Fredy Montero before Sebastián Blanco halved the deficit three minutes later.
George Fochive scored early in the second half to make it 2-2 on the scoreboard, but the Timbers could not push on from there and seal the three points. Raúl Ruidíaz restored the lead for the Sounders three minutes after the teams were back on level terms, and it was one-way traffic after. Ruidíaz added another in the 72nd minute before Nicolas Benezet scored a late brace to make it 6-2 on the night. But Portland got theirs back in the reverse fixture last season, when the two sides met just two weeks after their dramatic loss.
They did not have a lot of the possession or shots on target, but both their shots on goal went in, and they managed to secure a 2-0 win. Sebastián Blanco and Felipe Mora scored in the second half to hand them a shock away win, just days after they were thrashed at home.
The Seattle Sounders did not make a good start to the MLS campaign, losing their first two matches. They were beaten by Nashville SC and Real Salt Lake, by the same 1-0 scoreline. The Sounders then picked up their first win of the season in game week 3 when they took on LA Galaxy. Brian Schmetzer’s men secured a 3-2 win on that occasion, with Xavier Arreaga scoring the winner in the 72nd minute.
They could not defeat Austin FC and had to settle for a draw in their next match, but managed to get a 2-1 win at Minnesota United to round off a pretty disappointing first five matches of the season. Things didn’t get better, and involvement in the CONCACAF Champions League proved to be a fatal distraction as well, as they went on to lose their next three games. They were beaten by Inter Miami CF, San Jose Earthquakes and FC Dallas before San Jose knocked them out of the US Open Cup as well.

Seattle’s form has been largely positive in their last five matches, and they have picked up three wins. They thrashed Vancouver Whitecaps 4-0 at home, with a goal each from Nicolás Lodeiro, Alex Roldán and a brace from Raúl Ruidíaz.
They did well in their match against the league leaders Los Angeles FC as well, and held them to a 1-1 draw. Albert Rusnák handed them the lead in the 58th minute, but they could not hold on to it until the end and conceded the equalizer to Cristian Arango in the 79th minute.
They did well to bounce back from the draw, and Sporting Kansas City bore the brunt of that frustrating draw against LAFC, crashing to a 3-0 loss away from home as the Sounders kept their unbeaten run going. Will Bruin, Jordan Morris, and Cristian Roldán scored the goals for the Sounders in that game.
Their four-match unbeaten run came to an end the week before last, when they faced CF Montreal. Jordan Morris gave them an early lead with a goal in the 3rd minute, but Mason Toye made it 1-1 in the 18th minute. The Sounders could not do much with their chances since, and Toye’s second goal of the game in the 62nd minute sealed the win for them.
After losing to one Canadian side, they were up against another this past week, and the Sounders managed to get the win. Dylan Teves scored late in the first half to put Seattle ahead and Fredy Montero sealed the win with a goal in the 60th minute.
João Paulo, Xavier Arreaga, Raúl Ruidíaz, Obed Vargas and Joshua Atencio are ruled out.
Portland Timbers would have had a start to forget in the league this season if it was not for Yimmi Chará. The Timbers’ newly-minted star scored two stunning overhead kicks in the first two matches to help them rescue a point each from those games. Following the draws against New England Revolution and Los Angeles FC, the Timbers managed to get their first win of the season. They edged out a 1-0 win over Austin FC, but then went on a three-match winless streak.
They ended their winless start with a victory over Vancouver Whitecaps, but then went on another four-match streak without wins, picking up draws against Houston Dynamo, New York Red Bulls, and Real Salt Lake while losing to Colorado Rapids away from home.
The players seemed to have regained their confidence with a 7-2 win over Sporting Kansas City. Still, only to lose their next three matches to Philadelphia Union, San Jose Earthquakes, and Inter Miami CF.
After their three-match losing run, the Timbers fans were hoping for a big comeback, and the players have done decently well. They managed to get a draw against LA Galaxy again this season before picking up wins over Colorado Rapids in the return fixture, and then against Houston Dynamo. Sebastián Blanco scored once, while Jarosław Niezgoda got a brace in their comfortable 3-0 win over the Rapids in a match they dominated from the start to the finish.
That was not the case when they hosted Houston Dynamo as the away side dominated the match. Santiago Moreno scored a brace in the first half to give Timbers a two-goal lead. This lead saw Dynamo come back out and focus on keeping possession in the second half. Darwin Quintero sparked the comeback seven minutes after coming on with a goal in the 65th minute, but even a red card to Timbers’ Bill Tuiloma wasn’t enough eventually as the Houston side couldn’t find any more goals
As far as winning streaks go, it was the same story for the Portland side once again last weekend as they failed to make it three wins in a row. They went 2-0 down to Nashville SC in the 57th minute before Dairon Asprilla and Jarosław Niezgoda scored within five minutes of each other in the second half to make it 2-2 to share the points.
Cristhian Paredes and Diego Gutierrez are ruled out.
