Philadelphia Union have endured a busy schedule so far as they reached the semifinals of the CONCACAF Champions League this season. Eventually, they were eliminated by the 2022 MLS Champions, Los Angeles FC. A little over a week ago, Minnesota United eliminated Philadelphia Union from the US Open Cup. In the league, however, the Union are on a five-game unbeaten streak, which they will want to extend this weekend.
The eight-game unbeaten streak of New England Revolution in the MLS ended last weekend when the side lost against Inter Miami CF. New England Revolution and FC Cincinnati were level on points and fighting for a long time at the top of the table. The loss has put the five-time MLS champions in second place, three points off the leaders. The last thing the New England Revolution would want is for the deficit to increase to six points.
Both sides have been dealt a few blows over the past few weeks, and after licking their wounds, both will be hungry for all three points. But the odds are that they will end up canceling each other out on the pitch, and when the dust settles, the spoils will be shared.
There is a lot of history between these two teams in the MLS. They have played each other 36 times in the league. Philadelphia Union have won 19 of those encounters, while New England Revolution have only won nine. Eight games have ended in draws.
In the 2021 MLS season, New England Revolution did the double over Philadelphia Union. Last season, the Union finished as runners-up in the playoff final against Los Angeles FC. En route to the final, they remained unbeaten against the New England Revolution, drawing away and winning at home.
New England Revolution’s win at Subaru Park in 2021 was only their fifth away win against Philadelphia Union in 21 attempts in the MLS. The hosts have a stellar record of winning 14 of those matches, and only two have ended in draws.
Before suffering recent setbacks in the Champions League and the Open Cup, Philadelphia Union were panic-stricken when their new season got off to a horrendous start. In the opening five games of the season, the 2021 MLS runners-up lost three games.
However, the side bounced back and regained some of their lost momentum, which drove them all the way to the final last season. In the last seven league games, they have lost just once, and that loss came against league-leaders FC Cincinnati over a month ago.
The league is still five match days away from its midway point this season, but Philadelphia Union are already nine points off the top. The side will be eager to close that gap and get closer to the top four if not first place.
12 games into the new season, Philadelphia Union have lost four games. They lost five in the entirety of last season, during which they were unbeaten at home after 17 league games. The side could not replicate the unbeaten feat this season due to their home loss against Orlando City.
However, their home record is still quite strong. In the six league games they have played at home, Philadelphia Union have lost just once. The club is unbeaten in the last five home games in all competitions, drawing three and winning two.
The Philadelphia Union defenders will have to be on their toes to keep New England Revolution attackers at bay. The backline has previously encountered issues in defending and conceded penalties on three separate occasions.
This is the joint-highest penalty concession rate in the league this season. At the other end, Philadelphia Union are joint-second when it comes to winning penalties after being awarded four in 12 games this season.
A hammering blow landed on the momentum of the New England Revolution last weekend when they lost their prolific unbeaten streak after losing 2-1 against Inter Miami CF. Not only did the outcome end the streak, but it also dropped the club from the summit to second place.
To make things worse, days before the league loss against Inter Miami CF, New England Revolution were dumped out of the US Open Cup by USL Championship side Pittsburgh Riverhounds SC.
Now they face a strong Philadelphia Union side after losing two back-to-back games. A third successive loss could see New England Revolution drop six points behind FC Cincinnati if the league leaders win their fixture this weekend.
While Philadelphia Union are trying to maintain a strong home record, they will have to bring something extra if they want to take points off a side that currently possesses the best away record in the Eastern Conference.
FC Cincinnati are leading the league, but it is all because of their stellar home record. New England Revolution have picked up the most points on the road in the Eastern Division. They have won three, lost two, and drawn only one of their six matches.
However, their last outing was not one to remember, as they lost to Inter Miami. The other loss came in March when they were thrashed 4-0 by defending champions Los Angeles FC.
The New England Revolution were dealt a big blow when defender Henry Kessler suffered a hamstring injury in April and was sidelined for a couple of months. Andrew Farrell was deployed at the back to partner David Romney and the veteran has done a stellar job so far.
Farrell has been with New England Revolution for ten years and is playing well alongside Romney, who arrived at the club this season. In five starts so far, Farrell has only experienced defeat once. However, keeping clean sheets is still an issue his team needs to address.
