New York Red Bulls vs Philadelphia Union Prediction

This is a top of table clash between two sides from the Eastern Conference who are in great form and are mostly heading into games in preparation for the playoffs. Philadelphia Union have got the edge heading into this match and have the head-to-head advantage, beating New York Red Bulls 10 times, drawing nine and losing in eight of the 27 encounters.

They haven’t lost a match to the New York Red Bulls in some time and have been the best team in the Eastern Conference. They head into this match as favorites and should have far too much firepower for New York Red Bulls.

Previous Meetings

The last match between the two sides ended in a 1-1 draw back in May. The New York Red Bulls showed incredible fight on the day; having gone down a goal in the 47th minute because of a Daniel Gazdag strike, they then went down to 10 men after Dylan Nealis was sent off in the 55th minute for a second yellow card but clawed back into the game thanks to Luquinhas and held the Union to a draw.

The Red Bulls will need to show that fight and their quality if they’re going to get all three points against the most free-scoring team in the league at the moment.

Take a look at the prediction and betting tips for MLS Outright Winner, here!

New York Red Bulls Keep Moving Steadily

New York Red Bulls had looked a bit off the pace just a couple of weeks back but are now on a four-game unbeaten streak with the latest result being a 1-0 win against a strong CF Montreal side on Wednesday evening.

Lewis Morgan scored the only goal of the game just before half-time. New York Red Bulls have been one of the best teams on the road this season and proved the same once again. Their high-pressing game is perfectly suited to these away ties where the onus isn’t on them to dictate play with the ball.

Lewis Morgan Has Had an Understated Season

New York Red Bulls have had their problems in front of goal all season. The likes of Patrick Klimala haven’t done enough going forward but Lewis Morgan has taken the onus on himself and done admirably. He scored his 13th goal of the campaign against CF Montreal and has also registered four assists. If he can get some help soon, New York Red Bulls could go up a level. He’s not just got an eye for goal but also racks up great pressing, tackling and interception numbers from his attacking midfield role.

The Pressing Style Is Great When It Works

The game against Philadelphia Union might just suit them a little as Philadelphia Union will be expected to dominate the ball because of their excellent form in recent weeks but New York Red Bulls are playing at home, so it’s hard to say who’ll be the more dominant side on the ball.

New York Red Bulls’ style is best suited to sides that like to have a lot of the ball because a team that just goes long will bypass their press entirely. These are the sort of games they’ll have in the playoffs and this match should be a great test.

Philadelphia Union Put Four Past Atlanta United

Philadelphia Union just can’t stop scoring with Atlanta United, the latest MLS side to receive a beating at the hands of the Eastern Conference table leaders. Philadelphia Union won 4-1 on Wednesday and have now set an MLS record for most goals in three games. It’s been an outstanding effort from everyone involved with the team.

Julian Carranza, Mikkel Uhre, Daniel Gazdag and Nathaniel Harriel got on the scoresheet. Andrew Gutman scored the solitary goal for Atlanta United in the 24th minute, which leveled the score but it didn’t stop the side from facing a barrage of shots for the rest of the game.

Philadelphia Union Have Been Breathtaking in Attack

It’s hard to think of another side in any league showing the sort of dominance going forward that Philadelphia Union have shown in recent weeks. It almost felt like they were holding back a little, having scored six goals in their previous two games. Not to mention, they’d scored six past Houston and 7-0 past DC United earlier in the season as well.

A lot of credit must go to their attacking trio of Daniel Gazdag, Julian Carranza and Mikkle Uhre. All three of them are now in double digits with Gazdag on 17, Carranza on 14 and Uhre on 10 goals. Kai Wagner has set up seven goals as well. No team will like coming up against this attack.

Philadelphia Union Are the Best Team in the Eastern Conference

Earlier in the season, it looked like there wasn’t enough between New York City FC and Philadelphia Union but it’s now clear that they’re the top team in the Eastern Conference. Valentin Castellanos’ departure from New York City FC has a part to play in this but Philadelphia Union won’t care.

They’re now 57 points, eight ahead of CF Montreal, have scored 61 goals – more than any other side in the league and conceded just 21, which is less than any other side in the league.

They have a great chance to win the Supporters Shield now as they’re level on points with Los Angeles FC. It’s going to be hard for any team to stop them in this sort of form.
