Back to focusing on MLS’ regular season for the Inter Miami. With MLS’ 2021 playoffs coming up soon, both Inter Miami and the New York Red Bulls will be heading into this week with two very different trajectories. The Red Bulls are undefeated in their last five games and are now sitting in 9th place in the Eastern Conference. At time of writing, they are just two places behind a playoff-worthy spot at 7th.
As for Miami, who are sitting in 11th, it has been a rough stretch of weeks for the Florida club. They’ve lost their last four games and are looking less and less likely for a place in the postseason. On Saturday, go with the side with not only more momentum, but a home-field advantage.
It has been quite the turnaround for the Red Bulls. Once looking like one of the most out-of-form teams in the league in early September, they’ve since turned things around with a five-game undefeated stretch. Which is something that manager Gerhard Struber hasn’t ignored.
Following their 1-0 win over FC Cincinnati last week, the Red Bulls manager was elated with his squad. “We are very happy right now, after a big win for us,” said Struber earlier this week. “I think we fight, and we work so hard, that was the seventh game in 21 days.” “And my boys fight with all that they have, and they left everything on the field.” The players themselves seem to be highly motivated as well by their manager.
“Every time I’m on the field, honestly, I just want to run through a wall for that guy,” recently stated Red Bulls’ Sean Davis when discussing Struber. It’s an exciting moment for the club, and when looking back at their last few results, one noteworthy aspect that could help them continue to make progress is their defense.
Some of their latest scorelines may be narrow, but what has mattered most is the fact that the Red Bulls are now shutting down opposing attacks. In their last five games, they’ve collected three clean sheets and only allowed two goals.
Their backline is growing with confidence, and in their last nine matches, there has only been one instance in which they’ve allowed more than a goal. It’s incredibly impressive, and up against a faltering Miami, another clean sheet could be within reach for the Red Bulls.
It’s almost rollercoaster-like to see the ups and downs that Miami have taken. With a sudden influx of red cards and a lack of goals, they’ve lost their last four games of the regular season. As mentioned, their sudden dearth of goals has truly held them back.
Since September, Miami have a measly total of four goals in seven matches. Leading striker Gonzalo Higuain hasn’t been at his best either, and since August 14th, the former Juventus star only has two goals to his name.
Credit is due to Omir Fernandez and Cristian Casseres Jr.
In recent weeks, the two have been absolutely outstanding for the Red Bulls and a key reason as to why they are currently on an undefeated streak. Fernandez, who has three goals in his last five appearances, has been crucial with his sudden uptick in opportunities that have found the back of the net.
Casseres Jr, who has two assists in his last two matches, is another catalyst in the attack that has been efficient with their chances. As long as these two continue to thrive, and as long as their defenders maintain their form, the Red Bulls should be looking at another three points this week.
