A crunch encounter at the Yankee Stadium will feature New York City FC, who are winless in seven games in all competitions, take on New England Revolution, who are winless in their last five games in all competitions. Both sides are looking for a win but for different reasons.
While the hosts need three points to steer clear of the bottom of the Eastern Conference table, New England Revolution will need those points to try and close the gap to league leaders FC Cincinnati – a team with whom they were level on points just a few weeks ago.
Both clubs were in action this past Wednesday and failed to pick up all available points. However, New England Revolution managed to nab a point with their second 3-3 draw on the bounce. New York City FC, meanwhile, were battered 3-1 by FC Cincinnati at home.
New York City FC were unbeaten at home this season until this past week, during which they were beaten twice in their own backyard. Now staring at a third consecutive home defeat this weekend, the hosts could step up their game and emerge with all three points.
This fixture is fiercely contested and can go either way. Even the head-to-head record does not have much to separate the two sides. In 23 MLS encounters between these two sides, New England Revolution have bagged ten wins. New York City FC have notched eight victories.
The remaining five games have ended in draws. One of those draws came in the reverse fixture earlier this season. Charles Gil’s 70th-minute strike gave the hosts a late advantage in the game before Talles Magno equalized ten minutes later.
Last season, when New York City FC hosted New England Revolution, the hosts netted four past the visitors and conceded two in the process. New England Revolution’s last win at this venue came in the 2021 MLS season when Thomas McNamara netted an 88th-minute winner.
After being on the road for five consecutive games in all competitions, New York City FC expected some respite after returning home last weekend. However, they were pitted against last season’s runners-up Philadelphia Union.
The Cityzens suffered their first home defeat of the season against the Union and then lost another game this past Wednesday against FC Cincinnati. The recent loss has extended the host’s winless streak to seven games, during which they have lost six and drawn one.
Another tough encounter against the New England Revolution awaits the hosts in the next game. Despite being a strong team, the visitors have been struggling of late, and that could be the vulnerability New York City FC would aim to exploit.
In a mercurial season that has reaped some shocking outcomes on the pitch, New York City FC have had their fair share of struggles. However, the team has always been a top club that always wants to compete for silverware in every competition they are in.
However, this season they are at the wrong end of the table. Furthermore, if they lose the game against the New England Revolution, they will lose three successive home games for the first time since 2020. Also, they could end up at the bottom of the table after this weekend.
In the reverse fixture, Talles Magno scored popped up with an equalizer in the 80th minute to clinch a crucial point for New York City FC. This time around, the winger might not be fit enough to play after he reportedly picked up an abdominal injury.
In 14 appearances this season, the Brazilian has netted three goals and provided one assist. He has linked up well with the club’s top scorers, Gabriel Pereira, and Santiago Rodriguez. In the likely absence of Magno, the goal-getting responsibility will be on Pereira and Rodriguez.
Since the start of the 2023 MLS campaign, New England Revolution and FC Cincinnati have been locked in an epic battle for the summit of the Eastern Conference. That battle ended a few weeks ago because of the New England Revolution’s dismal form.
Across all competitions, the New England Revolution have failed to win their last five games. It all started with the US Open Cup exit against Pittsburgh Riverhounds SC. Two back-to-back defeats followed that result in the MLS against Inter Miami and Philadelphia Union.
The club has managed to dodge defeat in the last two games, but both have ended in thrilling stalemates. Single points will not be enough for the visitors if they intend to keep up with FC Cincinnati. Extra effort will be required to end their streak and extend New York City FC’s.
After losing three successive games, New England Revolution snatched a couple of points in the last two MLS games. The first came against Chicago Fire FC. The five-time MLS champions were on their way to losing another game before Jozy Altidore scored his first goal of the season.
The 33-year-old’s 88th-minute strike leveled the game 3-3, and the score remained unchanged till the end. In the last game, the situation was similar. Atlanta United took the lead in the 87th minute before Carles Gil made it 3-3 in the third minute of second-half stoppage time.
Brandon Bye has scored and assisted once in 13 appearances this season despite playing as a full-back. He has also been defensively astute, thwarting attacks that come down his flank. Unfortunately for him and his club, he will miss the next few games due to a shoulder injury.
This is a major concern for the New England Revolution, which are already without Henry Kessler. The defender picked up a hamstring injury early this month and is expected to return in a few weeks.
