New York City FC have never lost to Colorado Rapids in the league, and that streak could easily continue after this weekend. They have beaten the Rapids three times in five meetings so far, but have kept a clean sheet just twice.
Colorado Rapids have beaten New York City once in history, and that was a 1-0 win in the Mobile Mini Sun Cup back in 2017. Sam Cronin scored the lone goal in that game, but no player has managed to help them do the same in the league.
The last time these two sides met, Sebastian Anderson scored the opening goal of the game for Colorado Rapids in the sixth minute. The early lead from the first shot of the match meant Colorado sat back and defended for the rest of the half. Things took a turn for the bad midway through as Sebastian Anderson went from hero to zero. He got himself sent off in the 33rd minute, and that put more pressure on his teammates. Héber equalized for New York City seven minutes later, and it was one-way traffic.
However, the away side needed to wait until the 83rd minute to get their second goal. Alexandru Mitriță got on the scoresheet 20 minutes after he was brought on, and that turned out to be the winner. New York City finished the game with 78 percent possession, 29 shots, 11 corners, and over 700 passes – more than three times what Colorado Rapids managed in the match.
New York City FC enjoyed a brilliant pre-season but began their title defense with a loss. They were beaten by Javier Hernandez’s late goal in the season opener at LA Galaxy. The 1-0 loss was followed by a goalless draw at Vancouver Whitecaps.
New York City FC finally managed to get their first win of the season against CF Montreal, but that was the start of a four-match losing streak in all competitions.
Comunicaciones FC defeated them 4-2 in the CONCACAF Champions League, but they still managed to get into the next round on away goals. However, the defeat was followed by two in the league against Philadelphia Union and Toronto FC.
Seattle Sounders took advantage of the situation and rubbed salt to the wounds with a 3-1 win over New York in the CONCACAF Champions League. Ronny Deila managed to get his players back in the right mindset, but they got knocked out of the tournament as they failed to overturn the deficit in the second leg.
However, things took a turn for the good in the league as New York City FC bounced back with a stunning 6-0 win over Real Salt Lake. A thrilling 5-4 win over Toronto FC followed that, and the defending champions were ready to rumble.
The back-to-back wins saw the players regain their confidence, and they have been on an unbeaten run since. They are currently on a ten-match unbeaten streak and will be looking to keep that going this weekend.
New York City have dropped points only against Sporting Kansas City and won all their other matches in the current streak. The wins include two in the US Open Cup over Rochester New York FC and New England Revolution last month.
The club had some bad news for their fans earlier this week. New York City FC manager Ronny Deila has left the club this week and is heading to Belgian club Standard Liège. Assistant coach Nick Cushing will take charge of the upcoming matches and serve as interim manager of the club until a permanent replacement is named.
Cushing has an easy task to start with as Colorado Rapids are not in good form, but replicating what Deila did at the club would be a tough job for him or any other manager that comes in.
In other news – Anton Tinnerholm is ruled out.

Colorado Rapids sit 18th in the league table right now after a mixed start to the season. They have played 14 games but won just five times and lost six times in the process. This form is nothing new to the Rapids’ fans as they experienced it at the end of last season too.
Moreover, inconsistency was the theme in their pre-season too as they drew twice, won once, and lost once. The form continued as the season started and that has hurt them in the league standings. Robin Fraser’s men started with a 3-0 loss to Los Angeles FC and then won their next two games against Atlanta United and Sporting Kansas City by keeping a clean sheet in both.
As usual, they could not keep the run going for long and drew their next two matches. They were held to a 1-1 draw at Houston Dynamo and then at home by Real Salt Lake, with the same scoreline.
All things seem to be coming in twos for Colorado as their two wins and two draws were followed by two losses. They were beaten 3-1 by FC Dallas and then again by the same scoreline at Minnesota United.
They were looking to bring an end to their four-match winless streak when they faced Charlotte FC, but only managed another draw. However, they did manage to end the streak in the next match when they faced Portland Timbers.
Diego Rubio scored in the first half and got sent off in the second, but his teammates held on for the win. Mark-Anthony Kaye scored against the run of play in the final minutes of the game to seal the three points and end the winless streak.
But once again, they could not keep the momentum going and lost to San Jose Earthquakes in the league and got knocked out of the US Open Cup by Minnesota United. The inconsistent run is back once again as they have two wins and two losses in their last four matches. They won against Los Angeles FC at home and then lost to Sporting Kansas City in the next game week. They followed it up with a 1-0 win over Seattle Saunders at home again, but lost to Nashville SC last gameweek.
Braian Galván, Aboubacar Keita and Oliver Larraz are ruled out.
