Los Angeles FC are meeting Philadelphia Union for the fourth time in the league. Only one of the three games so far has seen an outright result, and that was a 4-1 win for LAFC in the very first meeting, back in 2018.
Adama Diomandé scored a hattrick for LAFC in the game, with Latif Blessing scoring their 4th and final goal. Fafà Picault did manage to get Union back in the game just before halftime when they were 2-0 down. However, his goal could not spark a comeback, and it ended up being a consolation in the end.
Since then, the two sides have drawn both their matches – the last one being a 3-3 draw in 2020. The game was full of twists and turns, with LAFC chasing the game from the start. They dominated possession and had more shots, but Union were more clinical and scored three goals from five shots on target.
Another drama-filled clash is expected this weekend as the two sides have made good starts to the season and will be looking to keep that going. Both teams have lost just once in their opening 9 matches, but LAFC have seven wins compared to Union’s six.
LAFC have made a brilliant start to the season and are on a 5-match unbeaten run too. This season’s only loss has been controversial after VAR ruled out a late goal. To make things worse for LAFC, the sole loss was against their derby rivals LA Galaxy.
Once again, Carlos Vela has been the main man for Steven Cherundolo’s men. He has scored 4 goals this season and is surprisingly being challenged by Ryan Hollingshead for the top scorer spot at the club. The defender has scored three goals already, which is more than any other outfield player at the club, barring Vela.
They kicked off their campaign with a dominating 3-0 win over Colorado Rapids on the opening weekend but could not carry the form into the next game. Portland Timbers manage to hold them to a 1-1 draw, despite going down to 10 men. Mamadou Fall scored the equalizer in the 93rd minute of the game to salvage a point.
The poor display was a wake-up call for the players, and they bounced back well. LAFC went on a 3-match winning streak and defeated Inter Miami, Vancouver Whitecaps, and Orlando City SC with ease.
They were the team in form and the team to beat for all sides in the league. LA Galaxy were determined to be the first team to stop LAFC, and they did exactly that. El Trafico saw the home side take a shock 2-0 lead in the first half via goals from Sega Coulibaly and Javier Hernández.
LAFC did not have an answer but were given a slight chance when Cristian Arango scored with 10 minutes left. The momentum had shifted, and it looked like Latif Blessing had got them level in injury time, but VAR ruled out the goal as the LAFC star was offside when the ball was played.
The league leaders were not happy with the call but could not do anything to change the result as the game was done. They took out the anger on Sportking Kansas CXCity with a 3-1 and followed it with a 5-1 thrashing of Orange County SC in the US Open Cup.
FC Cincinnati tried to get a result from their game against LAFC, and Luciano Acosta helped them take the lead at halftime. However, Kellyn Acosta and Daniel Musovski scored in the second half to give LAFC the three points once again.
Minnesota United were reluctant to let LAFC run away with the game and made things difficult for them until the very end. However, Ryan Hollingshead and José Cifuentes scored in the last 8 minutes of the match and helped LAFC win 2-0.

Coming off a good pre-season, Philadelphia Union were confident of getting into the groove quickly. They were unbeaten in the friendlies, and the players showed promising signs of doing well in the league.
They started their season against Minnesota United, and things did not go as planned. Robin Lod handed the away side the lead midway through the first half, and they were in control. Cory Burke managed to level things up quickly, but the home side could not push on from there and only managed to get a draw despite having 19 shots at goal and 53% of the ball.
Jim Curtin needed a reaction from his players, and they did well in response. CF Montreal took the lead before halftime via Lassi Lappalainen before Dániel Gazdag and Alejandro Bedoya scored early in the second half to win the game for Philadelphia Union.
The come-from-behind win was exactly what was needed to boost the confidence of the players, and they went on a 5-match winning streak.
Philadelphia Union faced San Jose Earthquakes, New York City FC, and Charlotte FC in the following games and managed to win them by the same scoreline – 2-0. The players were in sync on the pitch and managed to ensure there were no unnecessary slip-ups on the road.
The hat-trick of clean sheets was followed by another one against Columbus Crew. This time, they were made to work for the three points and had to defend deep to get them. Eloy Room’s own goal in the second minute was the only difference between the two sides.
It looked like everything was falling in favor of Union, but then they suffered their first loss of the season. Despite taking the lead via Julián Carranza in the 34th minute, Philadelphia Union could not get to halftime ahead. Jesús Jiménez equalized for Toronto and Alejandro Pozuelo sealed the win early in the second half.
CF Montreal were up next once again this season for Union, and this time they could not steal the win. Julián Carranza handed them the lead early in the first half, but Kei Kamara’s leveler in the second half was enough for the Canadian side to leave with a point.
Nashville were on a similar run with a win, a draw, and a loss in their last three matches when they faced Philadelphia last weekend. They were looking to take advantage of Union’s drop in form, but only managed to steal a point. Mikael Uhre handed the away side the lead in the 66th, but Randall Leal leveled it for Nashville with 5 minutes left.
