There is no clear winner in the head-to-head record when the LA Galaxy meet Houston Dynamo. Both sides usually do well against each other; this time around, the home side will be looking to use their start to the season to go on and win.
LA Galaxy did win the last meeting with Houston Dynamo – back in October last year. The game ended 3-0 in their favor after goals from Sacha Kljestan and Kevin Cabral. Zarek Valentin scored an own goal as well to make the scoreline even more commendable. However, the scoreline did not do justice to the dominance of Houston, as they had 23 shots but failed to score a single goal. On the other hand, LA Galaxy managed just 10 shots but walked away with three goals and three points.
The three meetings prior to that game ended in 1-1 draws. LA Galaxy made comebacks in two of the three draws against Houston Dynamo, and that confidence was seen when they last met.
Houston’s last win over LA Galaxy was back in 2019 – a 4-1 win at home thanks to late goals. Zlatan Ibrahimović scored an early goal for LA, but Christian Ramirez ensured the two teams went into halftime level on terms. Cristian Pavón handed LA the lead again early in the second half, but Alberth Elis, Christian Ramirez, and Memo Rodríguez scored once each to get the win for Houston.
LA Galaxy sit 7th in the league table right now after picking up six wins, and two draws in their opening 12 matches. They have scored just 13 goals in the league matches so far but have managed to collect 20 points easily.
Javier Hernandez helped them kick off the season with a late win over New York Red Bulls. The Mexican scored a solo goal in the 90th minute to steal the three points, and that was followed by another 1-0 win over Charlotte FC. Efrain Alvarez scored a stunner to silence the record crowd for Charlotte’s first home match in MLS history. The lone goal was enough for LA Galaxy to pick up all three points.
Their luck ran out when they faced the Seattle Sounders as they were beaten 3-2. Javier Hernández scored early in the game to hand LA Galaxy the lead, but Jordan Morris and Fredy Montero gave the home side the advantage before half time. Douglas Costa made it 2-2 quickly after the restart, but Xavier Arreaga’s late goal saw the home side pick up all three points.
Orlando City stunned La Galaxy next in the league as they sat back after Facundo Torres’s goal in the 9th minute. Despite having 63% possession and 20 shots on goal, LA Galaxy could not muster a goal and lost 1-0 at home.
They did not let their shoulders drop after back-to-back losses and got the three points against Portland Timbers. Javier Hernández scored twice and an own goal from Bill Tuiloma helped the away side pick up a 3-1 win. Bill Tuiloma scored at the right end in the second half, but it was not enough to spark a comeback.
Galaxy followed it up with a controversial win over Los Angeles FC in El Traffico as LAFC were denied a goal in the 99th minute. Javier Hernández and Sega Coulibaly scored as they ran out 2-1 winners. Since then, LA Galaxy have not managed a convincing win, but are managing to get points. They drew 0-0 with Chicago Fire and then won 1-0 against Nashville SC.
Real Salt Lake managed to stun them 1-0, but LA Galaxy bounced back with a 1-0 win over league leaders Austin FC. They lost 2-1 to FC Dallas last weekend and then went on to draw 1-0 at Minnesota in the midweek.
Adam Saldaña and Jorge Villafaña are out injured and will miss the game this weekend. Raheem Edwards got injured in their last game and is a doubt as well.
Houston Dynamo started the season in fine fashion but have faded away in recent matches. They had lost just once in their opening seven matches, but have now lost four of their last five games.
Paulo Nagamura’s side started the season with a goalless draw against Real Salt Lake at home and then went on to lose 1-0 to Kansas City in their first away game of the season. They did well to bounce back immediately and won 2-1 against Vancouver Whitecaps. Darwin Quintero’s brace helped them come from 1-0 down to win and collect their win three points of the season.
Mark-Anthony Kaye’s goal for Colorado Rapids looked set to hand Houston Dynamo yet another loss, but Tyler Pasher saved the day with a late goal. He scored in the 90th minute to help them get a draw and give them a little confidence.
Inter Miami were no match for Houston as they were beaten 3-1 comfortably. Darwin Quintero and Fafà Picault scored for Houston before Gonzalo Higuaín pulled one back. Fafà Picault got his second of the game in the dying minutes to ensure they walked away with all three points.
Houston Dynamo were then involved in a thriller as they edged out a 4-3 win at home to San Jose Earthquakes. Sebastián Ferreira handed the home side the lead in the 8th minute but Jeremy Ebobisse’s double saw San Jose take the lead in the 28th minute. Darwin Quintero made sure the teams went into the break on level terms.
Teenage Hadebe and Sebastián Ferreira got on the scoresheet early in the second half to restore Houston’s lead but the away side were not giving up. Tommy Thompson scored in the 77th minute to make it an exciting finish but both teams failed to score again and it ended 4-3.
Since then, the Dynamo have been in terrible form. They first drew to Portland Timbers and then lost three matches in a row to FC Dallas, Austin FC, and DC Union. They got a win against Nashville SC last weekend but were once again beaten by Seattle Sounders during the week to break their confidence. Paulo Nagamura will be hoping that his players get a much needed win this weekend and kick start the season again.
Adalberto Carrasquilla is suspended after picking up two yellows in the loss against Seattle Sounders. Adam Lundqvist is also out after he was sent off in the win over Nashville at the weekend, and this will be his second match out of the three-game suspension.
