Back to focusing on MLS’ regular season for the Seattle Sounders.
Following a run in the 2021 Leagues Cup that ended last week, the Sounders will now have one less distraction to deal with in this year’s schedule.
As seen in their latest match — an impressive 2-1 away win over Sporting Kansas City — there’s plenty that they can still offer and prioritize after their Leagues Cup run.
Although the San Jose Earthquakes will host this one, Seattle should be pushing for three points.
Seattle for the win.
Just days after losing to Leon 3-2 in the Leagues Cup final, Seattle manager Brian Schmetzer knew his team needed to respond.
Last Sunday, the Sounders took on Sporting Kansas City and finished with an eyecatching 2-1 away win.
How are we going to bounce back mentally? Well, our team just gave you guys the answer!
Said Schmetzer after the match.
Seattle wasted no time, and by the 31st minute against SKC, they had a 1-0 lead thanks to a 1st half goal from Cristian Roldan.
That lead went up to 2-0 by the 55th minute, and although SKC responded with a lone goal in the 2nd half, it wasn’t enough to knock out a Sounders side that appeared defensively solid.
In the battle for the top spot in the Western Conference, the victory was a massive one for Schmetzer and his men in their hopes of holding onto 1st place.
And the good news for them, and for Sounders fans as well, is the fact that they tend to not have too many issues when needing to get points outside of their home ground.
No team in MLS’ Western Conference have been able to collect more points away from home than the Sounders.
In their 12 away games, they’ve been superb with eight wins, two draws, and two losses.
As for the last time that the Sounders visited San Jose, they were able to escape from PayPal Park in May with a narrow 1-0 win.
Can they do it again?
Especially up against an erratic side, there is a good chance…
San Jose can be a bit all over the place when it comes to their results this season.
Perhaps inspired by manager Matias Almeyda’s methods and tactics that have changed throughout 2021, it’s difficult to feel confident about San Jose week in and week out.
And if we were talking about Seattle’s away record, then we must bring up San Jose’ complications at home.
At PayPal Park, the Earthquakes have four wins, three draws and six losses.
Most recently, of their last five games at home, they only have one single win.
Days after scoring Seattle’s first goal in the Leagues Cup championship game against Leon, midfielder Cristian Roldan stepped up once again with a goal in Seattle’s latest win over SKC.
Once the final whistle was blown for Sunday’s game, Roldan was selected as the Man of the Match.

It was a significant moment for the 26-year-old that appears compelled to continue making a difference.
“It was a huge win. We felt like it was a must-win, a six-point game if we want to win Western Conference. Still a lot of time, but if we want to achieve what we want to achieve, we needed to win that game,” said Roldan after the latest victory.
Keep an eye on the well-rounded midfielder who is at an exciting moment in his career.
